Please can you help me - I have an old programmes called Quicken 98 and my new windows 7 laptop won't let me load it on - how can I get this programme on my machine?

Just to confirm that I have had no problems installing Quicken 98 on W7 64 bit by using the exe file in the W95 folder rather than the autorun option. This must be run in compatibility mode.  For those that are interested I have also got it running on W8 preview edition which is largely based on W7. This was the best version Intuit ever made in my opinion and future editions I feel were pointless twiddling.As previously mentioned, printer no longer works and program always opens with a blank screen,just minimize it, maximize it, job done. Love this program, just hope to be able to use it for many years to come. I always save to a (dont laugh) 32mb usb stick, got 12 years of data and still loads of room left on it.

Yep, I'm in the UK, from which market Quicken was withdrawn many versions ago, so we have no support and no newer version we can upgrade to. I believe I had a 6-digit authorisation code to begin with, but acquired the 16-digit code when reinstalling some time after 2000 (from a telephone helpline that then existed). You're right: UK users can proceed without a code but will be locked out of the programme after a certain number of uses.

Hope these exchanges help a few other users get a little more life out of what is undoubtedly the best personal-finance programme to hit the market.

Thanks for the details. I tried what you are doing when installing Quicken 98 Deluxe onto Windows 7 Professional, but don't think I tried changing the directory exactly as you specify. Anyway, what I did worked for me, and hopefully these various methods will give those interested more "aces in their decks," if you will.

Regarding the 16 digit code --you must have the U.K. version? Here in U.S., if I'm not mistaken, there was only a 6 digit code. Not entering it didn't ever seem to prevent one from using the program; there was just no way to eliminate the annoying start up window to remind registration when the program was opened. I've read that the registration # was required in the U.K. to run the program after it was opened "x" number of times.

Also, I had no Year 2000 Solution disc that you reference -it's possible that could have made a difference in ease of installing -hard to tell.

Mushroom Man's procedure sounds much more complicated than the one I used. I offer it here in case it helps any of the outstanding queries. I used it to install Quicken 98 on to a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium PC. It may or may not have been critical that I had a "Year 2000 Solution" disc supplied by Intuit and a 16-digit registration code supplied at some interim stage by a telephone helpline that no longer exists. If you have these two things, try my process.

The 16-bit version of Quicken won't run on a 64-bit OS, and the Autorun version on the “Year 2000 Solution” disc is 16-bit. However, there is a 32-bit .exe file on the disc. Open its contents and look for the Win95 folder (the Win31 folder contains the 16-bit version). Open Win95 and double-click on “setup.exe”; choose Custom installation.

The default destination folder for the installation is C:\quickenw, which has to be changed to C:\progra˜2\quickenw\ (progra˜2 should have the tilde at mid-height and is the DOS name for Program Files (x86), the correct folder for 32-bit applications in 64-bit Windows). Also, uncheck “install IE3” and check “install IE4” instead. Finally, when Windows tells you the programme is “not set up properly”, cancel this message; it's a lie.

As for registering the product, I think the instructions on the disc are still valid; choose telephone registration and input the 16-digit code.
