Please can you help me - I have an old programmes called Quicken 98 and my new windows 7 laptop won't let me load it on - how can I get this programme on my machine?

The best and most comprehensible answer. Quicken 2002 was not available but the 2000 version worked just fine. The install worked like a charm on my Sony Vaio running Vista and my Dell Inspiron running W7. Already had Q98 running on a Dell Latitude running XP.  I used the 98 Quicken.ini file on one computer and the 2000 Quicken.ini file on the other computer, and there didn't seem to be a difference in performance between the two systems.

You have to do the install while logged in as Administrator. Manipulating the Quicken.ini file in the Windows folder got the Registration to shut off while logged in as Administrator, but strangely, Registration popped up every other login as a regular user. I couldn't figure out that part.

I don't use the backup feature of Q98; preferring to backup manually to various off-computer locations using batch scripts or shortcuts. And of course, the print feature does not work. But I only need print outs at tax time and the XP system prints just fine, and Shift+PrntScr or Alt+PrntScr will work for small reports.

Quicken Deluxe 98 works great for me -no reason to upgrade, especially after reading negative reviews on the latest versions! I have used the program for 14 years, and will use it 14 more years, as long as operating systems allow!

I recently transitioned from XP to Windows 7 Professional. Quicken 98 wouldn't install, so I  installed a virtual machine (XP Mode) on computer. Quicken 98 installed on that and works beautifully, however since it's the only program I have in XP mode, I found it cumbersome to go to XP mode everytime I wanted to open Quicken. I experimented around, and found the following solution to install Quicken 98 on the Windows 7 Professional Operating System:

1. Copied QUICKENW folder and contents from virutal machine (XP mode) and pasted to Program Files Folder (x86) in Windows 7.
2. Copied 3 .dll files from Windows/System32 of virtual machine to C:/Windows folder in Windows 7. Those files were IPROF32.DLL, Q_encutl.dll, and Q_enclib.dll. Quicken then worked (with a couple of minor gitches -more on that later).
3. I went ahead and moved other Intuit .dll folders from C:\Windows on virtual machine to C:\Windows on Windows 7, though these were likely not necessary files. They were: Qcon32.dll, Qconnect.dll, and icg32.dll.
4. The program opens and runs, with a few minor issues: a) the help files no longer work, b) the account register or accounts screen doesn't open when the program is opened, and c) I keep getting the annoying registration reminder. I solved A and C and found a work around for B. Solutions below:
5. To enable viewing of help files, follow the link in the message that is displayed when trying to access help screen in Quicken -it is something like "cannot find Winhelp.exe." The link goes to a Microsoft download page that downloads winhelp32.exe on computer, which then solves the help screen issue.
6. An easy workaround to register or accounts screen not loading when opening Quicken 98: after opening program, simply shrink the window and then open it back up. This can be done quickly and easily by clicking the Quicken icon twice at the bottom of the screen in the Taskbar.
7. To eliminate the appearance of the annoying reminder to register screen upon opening Quicken, I did the following:

i) moved the files QWREMIND.INI and qwrmdnd.dll from the QUICKENW folder to a temporary folder

ii) attempted to open Quicken Program, but would not open -said it could not find qwrmdnd.dll

iii) moved qwrmdnd.dll back to the original folder (QUICKENW folder)

iv) opened program

v) closed program

vi) moved QWREMIND.INI back to the original folder (QUICKENW folder)

I don't know if all these steps were necessary to cancel the annoying registration window upon startup of the program, but it worked for me!

Finally, there has been much discussion about backing up Quicken files and getting an error message that the drive is full. The information that a smaller drive is necessary due to when this program was written and the operating systems it was designed to be used on seems partially correct, but sometimes I seem to be able to backup to larger drives as big as 1 TB (and sometimes not!) The solution of having a 1 or 2 GB Flash drive is a good one. Also, a person can simply go to Windows Explorer and copy the contents of the backup folder to a folder on another drive. The files needed end in the extension .QDF, QEL, and QSD.

Hopefully this information can be useful for others who wish to continue using Quicken Deluxe 98 (a great program!) on Windows 7.

Is there a way of upgrading them from '16 to 64   - and what is 64 bit

I have already found it presents problems for abode on the internet - I have had to access certain sites with a 32 bit access (I have no idea what I'm talking about - but I just know it works with a different icon!

I do not know these products in detail. If they are 16 bit and you are running a 64 bit win 7 they will not work. You would be advised to go the the web sites of the manufacturers of these products and find out. They will have information regarding Win 7. Some products are simply too old technically to run on the latest software.
