Red X on system tray connection icon even though I am connected to the Internet. OS is Win 7 64 bit, how do I correct this.

Red X in system tray connection icon...have reset router, restarted computer...how to correct this problem

All you actually had to do and I know this is a late late reply but its just in the case of letting you know how easy it really was to fix this issue what you should have done was turn the internet system icon off and back on that's what fixed this issue for me....

Try this. It worked for me.

I finally removed the security from my network and the network status now shows me as connected. The red X is gone. It seems that Windows 7 does not support WPA2-PSK. I cannot imagine that is the case. Any ideas as to why, as installed on my PC, it does not have an option for WPA2-PSK? As I said, the hardware is supported and previously worked with XP.

If you have LogMeIn Hamachi Installed

uninstall it then disconnect your internet and reconnect it

or reboot the computer.

if that doesn't work

goto Device Manager by click the windows Icon on the bottom left and type in "Device Manager"

also going to the Control Panel and click "Device Manager" works

once the window opens on the left side of the window there should be a category named "Network Adapters"

click the arrow next to it your "Network Adapter" and "Wireless Network Adapter" should appear

right click both of them and uninstall them a window should pop up

"DO NOT DELETE THE DRIVER"

just click "OK"

reboot your computer once they reinstall go back into the "Device Manager" and right click both of them but this timer click "Update Device Driver" both of them

select "Search automatically for updated driver software"

you're done that should do it :)

if you still can't get it to work try all of this in Safe Mode

I found this to work:

Open the Registry Editor

If you use Windows 7 browse to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

Delete the data of the following keys in this folder:

    IconStreams

    LastAdvertisement

    PastIconsStream

    PromotedIconCache

    UserStartTime

Open the Task Manager.

   Switch to the process tab.

   Kill every explorer.exe process

   (this is necessary because the explorer.exe has a backup copy of this keys in the RAM and writes it back to the registry on shutdown)

   Switch to the application tab of the Task Manager.

   Press "New Task".

   Type "explorer.exe" and press [Enter].

N1ck_H's answer is the most convenient of the other two listed. All you need to do is clear the 'cache' of the Taskbar Icons and that's all - no need to download anything.
how to do that exactly? i been looking for "clear cache" or something but no dice :/

Was skeptical that it would work, but sure enough it did. Was very odd that I was connected via CAT5 yet the icon was showing a red X.
