Red X on system tray connection icon even though I am connected to the Internet. OS is Win 7 64 bit, how do I correct this.

All you actually had to do and I know this is a late late reply but its just in the case of letting you know how easy it really was to fix this issue what you should have done was turn the internet system icon off and back on that's what fixed this issue for me....

Try this. It worked for me.

I finally removed the security from my network and the network status now shows me as connected. The red X is gone. It seems that Windows 7 does not support WPA2-PSK. I cannot imagine that is the case. Any ideas as to why, as installed on my PC, it does not have an option for WPA2-PSK? As I said, the hardware is supported and previously worked with XP.

    After spending half a day on it, every which way with no lasting result, I decided on this (it works for me):

    Download this (it's free):

    Install it, and make a shortcut in your Sartup folder (there's an option to have it start with Windows, but it doesn't seem to work).

    Set it to have Vista-style icon (looks more like Windows 7 than XP).

    Make the RedX, orange asterisk or whatever Network  icon always hidden in  Customize for Notification Tray (I'm assumin everyone knows how to do this).

    Reboot, and UAC will ask you if you want to run the program you just installed - uncheck the box saying you want to ba asked every time.

    I have had no trouble at all with this, and the new icon has more easily-accessible information on your connection than the one you hid!

    Hope this helps someone.

    I found this to work:

    1. Open the Registry Editor
    2. If you use Windows 7 browse to:

        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

    1. Delete the data of the following keys in this folder:

        IconStreams

        LastAdvertisement

        PastIconsStream

        PromotedIconCache

        UserStartTime

    1. Open the Task Manager.

       Switch to the process tab.

       Kill every explorer.exe process

       (this is necessary because the explorer.exe has a backup copy of this keys in the RAM and writes it back to the registry on shutdown)

       Switch to the application tab of the Task Manager.

       Press "New Task".

       Type "explorer.exe" and press [Enter].

    Having found the same problem I went through these steps. Immediately afterwards the Red X changed to the Blue Wait Circle, then after a while the Red X came back. I went through the steps again, rebooted immediately, and it was the same. Any further suggestions please?

    OK so it's 2 years later but hey, thanx so much HeikoM !! I'm not at all techno savvy and even had to google how to get to the Register Editor. BUT I did it and it worked a treat yay :)
