Lose Internet Connection After Sleep Mode/Standby/Hibernate

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite e9105z CTO Desktop and migrated from Win XP to Vista Home Premium x64, with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Controller.  Whenever I come out of sleep- or standby-mode, I lose my Internet connection and have to either reboot my system or run the Windows Network Diagnostics to repair the network adapter settings.

I have tried several remedies available from the Internet; but unfortunately, nothing has resulted in a permanent solution.  I contacted my ISP provider (Mediacom) to ask if there was/is an issue with the firmware used to support my SBV5220 cable modem (e.g., non-compatibility with Vista) and they said there isn't.  To date, I've:

  1. Reinstalled network card driver.
  2. Checked and reset power options with USB CDC.
  3. Applied update for Windows Vista (Default Gateway Setting is Lost ) for x64-based Systems (KB933872)--received response that update does not apply to system.
  4. Reset IP configuration via Cmd line.
  5. Under the Power Management tab, unchecked the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in.

I access the computer several times a day and having to reset Internet connections has become extremely aggravating.  I hope there is a solution.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Returning from a 3-week vacation, during which my desktop was off, my local internet connection would no longer come active when it came out of hibernation.  The wireless functioned, but the local connection would not work unless I physically unplugged the cable from the router (Netgear) and reinserted it.

After several days of frustration I went into Device Manager, unchecked the  ethernet adapter option "allow the computer to turn off this device".

This seems to have cleared up the problem, at least so far...

    I'm not going to start a new thread, this is the correct one as it was the best and only option from a google search and the regular Microsoft sites were of no help.

    As an "MS MVP" I would have thought you could figure out that "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]" WAS MS Vista.  Though I can see why you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell the service pack or bit version of the machine, so I'll forgive that transgression.  As for the IE version that is completely irrelevant since this issue occurs with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for IE and I tried IE version 7 and version 8, not to mention the fact that I usually use Firefox versions 3.5 and 3.6 (plus numerous upgrades) and that other programs cannot connect to the internet when this happens.

    Also_frustrated: is correct.   Cudos to casoncasa for the eventual solution to this problem for me.

    If anyone is still experiencing the issue where you cannot connect to the internet after your computer returns from either Sleep or Hibernation, try this:

    Follow the instructions that casoncasa posted above.  However, in my case, I had to alter the step 5 instructions.  I CHECKED the box for "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power".  This has worked for me for the last three weeks.  Now every time my computer wakes up from Sleep, the internet connection is fully active and I don't have to use Diagnose and Repair or reset the Network Adapter!

    To me this solution makes more sense:  by checking the box you are telling Windows that it needs to wake up the network adapter and therefore it re-establishes the connection correctly.  Your mileage may vary.  I have Windows Vista-64 with Service Pack 2 and an on-board NVIDIA nForce Ethernet 'card' in a Gateway LX-6810 machine.

    I would suggest that anyone with this problem first make certain they have the latest updates from Microsoft and have at least Service Pack 1 or better yet SP2 installed.  Then follow casoncasa's instructions in the second half of the post, and if it doesn't work for you (or if the box is already unchecked), then try my modification and check the box.

    As I posted below, your fix did work for me but I had to CHECK the box in step 5.  Would you mind confirming this setting?  Since you stated "unchecking" several times, I'm guessing it wasn't just a typo.  So I'm curious if perhaps you are using a laptop, whereas I have a desktop machine.  Though I'm not quite certain why that would make a difference.  Perhaps it has to do with the version/brand of the network card or computer's BIOS.

    I believe you are correct regarding how the computer must handle the resume from sleep, and the Reset Network Adapter method does work each time when you resume, but I don't like that option.  The more permanent solution seems to be to check the box, which seems like it would notify Windows and/or Power Management that the device needs to be initialized.

    BTW I still think this has nothing to do with IE and the whole discussion could have been moved to a more appropriate forum.
