Lose Internet Connection After Sleep Mode/Standby/Hibernate

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite e9105z CTO Desktop and migrated from Win XP to Vista Home Premium x64, with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Controller.  Whenever I come out of sleep- or standby-mode, I lose my Internet connection and have to either reboot my system or run the Windows Network Diagnostics to repair the network adapter settings.

I have tried several remedies available from the Internet; but unfortunately, nothing has resulted in a permanent solution.  I contacted my ISP provider (Mediacom) to ask if there was/is an issue with the firmware used to support my SBV5220 cable modem (e.g., non-compatibility with Vista) and they said there isn't.  To date, I've:

  1. Reinstalled network card driver.
  2. Checked and reset power options with USB CDC.
  3. Applied update for Windows Vista (Default Gateway Setting is Lost ) for x64-based Systems (KB933872)--received response that update does not apply to system.
  4. Reset IP configuration via Cmd line.
  5. Under the Power Management tab, unchecked the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in.

I access the computer several times a day and having to reset Internet connections has become extremely aggravating.  I hope there is a solution.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Returning from a 3-week vacation, during which my desktop was off, my local internet connection would no longer come active when it came out of hibernation.  The wireless functioned, but the local connection would not work unless I physically unplugged the cable from the router (Netgear) and reinserted it.

After several days of frustration I went into Device Manager, unchecked the  ethernet adapter option "allow the computer to turn off this device".

This seems to have cleared up the problem, at least so far...

    I think you're asking in the wrong forum, e.g. try W7 Networking instead.   However, more detail about your connection is necessary to understand your symptom.    E.g. I have DSL for PPPoE too but I let W7 manage the PPPoE just as it would manage a PPP connection if I still had dial-up.   That gives me more control over recovering outages such as you are describing, so one thing that I can do is simply start my WLMail mail client and have it check mail.   That initiates an Auto-dial and restores the connection.   I experimented with having the modem act as a firewall and manage all the PPPoE itself but issues such as this made it too hard to manage that way when they happened.   Besides that any time I want to involve my ISP to diagnose an outage I have to tear that all down anyway because they "don't support it", expecting only a bridge configuration.  

    I think the basic problem is that when there is only a LAN connection apparent that the user is not given enough control over the inevitable timeouts that may happen getting a  PPPoE  connection established to the Internet.   So what you're left with is a LAN connection but no Internet connection and no clear method to diagnose or repair that condition.  E.g. W7 can't help because then your configuration would imply that the actual connectivity to the Internet is the responsibility of another device.

    I'm having similar connectivity issues.  This seems to be a common problem.

    Your steps above did not fix the problem and other suggestions here have not seemed to apply either (specifically the unchecking of the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" as this is already not checked).

    Cudos to casoncasa - I have been struggling with this for weeks on a one year old Vista x64 Acer desktop.  I could not find a problem and my ISP did not have a solution either.

    I saw this post regarding the network adapter and power management option. I applied it and ....

    Voila !! it works !!
