Lose Internet Connection After Sleep Mode/Standby/Hibernate

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite e9105z CTO Desktop and migrated from Win XP to Vista Home Premium x64, with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Controller.  Whenever I come out of sleep- or standby-mode, I lose my Internet connection and have to either reboot my system or run the Windows Network Diagnostics to repair the network adapter settings.

I have tried several remedies available from the Internet; but unfortunately, nothing has resulted in a permanent solution.  I contacted my ISP provider (Mediacom) to ask if there was/is an issue with the firmware used to support my SBV5220 cable modem (e.g., non-compatibility with Vista) and they said there isn't.  To date, I've:

  1. Reinstalled network card driver.
  2. Checked and reset power options with USB CDC.
  3. Applied update for Windows Vista (Default Gateway Setting is Lost ) for x64-based Systems (KB933872)--received response that update does not apply to system.
  4. Reset IP configuration via Cmd line.
  5. Under the Power Management tab, unchecked the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in.

I access the computer several times a day and having to reset Internet connections has become extremely aggravating.  I hope there is a solution.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Returning from a 3-week vacation, during which my desktop was off, my local internet connection would no longer come active when it came out of hibernation.  The wireless functioned, but the local connection would not work unless I physically unplugged the cable from the router (Netgear) and reinserted it.

After several days of frustration I went into Device Manager, unchecked the  ethernet adapter option "allow the computer to turn off this device".

This seems to have cleared up the problem, at least so far...

Would it not fix it by adding the DNS IP address (addresses) to the software firewall trusted zone? It could be the firewall preventing a reconnection.

I figured it out.  At least this works for my machine.

    Quick Fix... Once per session

    1. Right click on your Network Icon in the System Tray (The one with the red X on it)
    2. Chose Diagnose and Repair
    3. Pick the last option Reset Network Adapter
    4. Voila... you should have your internet back.

If that works, you probably have a problem with the settings for your network adapter.  Here is my permanent fix

    1)  Click Start -> Search [Device Manager] enter

    1. Expand Network Adapters, and pick the enabled adapter
    2. RIght click and Open the Properties for it
    3. Click on the Power Management Tab.
    4. Uncheck the box for "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power"
    5. Press Ok and you are done

As I understand it, when you sleep / hibernate / Standby, if the power is turned off on the network adapter, you will lose your internet access. When you resume, just powering on the device is not enough.  By Resetting the Network adapter, it forces it to go through the entire bring up process.  Before unchecking the box, I had to reset on every resume.  Now I have been up and operational for 3 days with no problems.

My computer has this problem (Windows 7 Professional), although my wife's computer (XP Home) connected through the same router doesn't. I opened Network and sharing Centre, went through Troubleshoot Problems/Network Connections, and "Problem found 'Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP connection", problem fixed until Sleep or Hibernate used again. Then found that unplugging from the router and plugging into a spare port always works, and it's quick. But I'd like a permanent solution.

Edent - I have this exact same problem on my computer running Windows 7 Home Premium.

One month ago, I got a brand new HP Pavillion Slimline desktop that came with Windows 7 installed.  I have a dsl modem connected with an ethernet cable, and every time I Shut down the computer or put it in Sleep mode, when I try to get back online, I get a very slow connection or I'll lose it entirely.

I've tried troubleshooting and searched for all the fixes I could find pertaining to this issue.  I've found that my only solution is to unplug the modem, restart it, reboot the computer, then I have no problems until I turn off the computer again or put it in Sleep mode.  I TOO would like a permanent solution.  This unplug-restart-reboot routine is getting frustrating.  I hope someone at Microsoft can fix this!
