Lose Internet Connection After Sleep Mode/Standby/Hibernate

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite e9105z CTO Desktop and migrated from Win XP to Vista Home Premium x64, with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Controller.  Whenever I come out of sleep- or standby-mode, I lose my Internet connection and have to either reboot my system or run the Windows Network Diagnostics to repair the network adapter settings.

I have tried several remedies available from the Internet; but unfortunately, nothing has resulted in a permanent solution.  I contacted my ISP provider (Mediacom) to ask if there was/is an issue with the firmware used to support my SBV5220 cable modem (e.g., non-compatibility with Vista) and they said there isn't.  To date, I've:

  1. Reinstalled network card driver.
  2. Checked and reset power options with USB CDC.
  3. Applied update for Windows Vista (Default Gateway Setting is Lost ) for x64-based Systems (KB933872)--received response that update does not apply to system.
  4. Reset IP configuration via Cmd line.
  5. Under the Power Management tab, unchecked the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in.

I access the computer several times a day and having to reset Internet connections has become extremely aggravating.  I hope there is a solution.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Returning from a 3-week vacation, during which my desktop was off, my local internet connection would no longer come active when it came out of hibernation.  The wireless functioned, but the local connection would not work unless I physically unplugged the cable from the router (Netgear) and reinserted it.

After several days of frustration I went into Device Manager, unchecked the  ethernet adapter option "allow the computer to turn off this device".

This seems to have cleared up the problem, at least so far...

    Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. It helped us to solve this issue that was bugging us for months.

    We solved the problem by TICKING "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" on the power management tab of the LAN NIC.

    If this is not ticked, the NIC stays powered on (ready for updates, maintenance, etc) during sleep.

    If this is ticked, the NIC turns off in sleep state and gets re-initialized upon resume from sleep and network will be available immediately. 

    One drawback is that the computer does not respond to e.g. magic packets. However, most companies do not use magic packets for security and other reasons, thus most of us can live with it.

    On a side note: If you change the power settings for laptops, bear in mind that you should not allow the NIC to awake the computer from sleep. If you do, it will definitely happen that laptops will be turned on randomly while they are in their bags because the NIC has a funny moment, causing hardware damage because of overheating, battery deterioration and in worst case even loss of work.

    Thanks for the advice ...but being an old lady of 78 I dont understand most of it

    If I switch off my router for 10 seconds ,then switch it back on and wait a few minutes ,then I am connected back on to messenger ...but this is becoming a bit of a pain ..

    I have a Dell desktop with Windows 7 and a wireless router, and erratically have this problem of no internet after sleep. Here is my voodoo fix to wake up my Internet connection. (This trick is faster than restarting, particularly if you have to do the rigamarole of turning off wireless router and modem too.) So far it has worked every time.

    1. Go to control panel -->device manager -->network--> microsoft virtual wifi miniport

    2.Right click on it and click disable. Leave it disabled. (Since you can't find a secure updated driver download, it isn't doing anything anyway. These drivers are not listed in Microsoft downloads.com, and they shamelessly wanted $38 to tell me when I asked how to update them!)

    Now you're set up for the voodoo trick, namely:

    1. Whenever you need your internet connection to wake-up after sleep, go here again, right click on 'microsoft virtual wifi miniport' again even though its disabled, and click update drivers. This wakes up your Internet connection. Refuse the insecure download it finds when prompted. Then click on your browser and, lo, your internet is working.

    Tell me if this works for anybody else with this problem. Presumably whatever this voodoo does Microsoft can include in its next service pack of updates. Perhaps they'll fix the insecure driver download for their virtual wi-fi miniport also - and not ask $38 for what should be working in the first place.
