Lose Internet Connection After Sleep Mode/Standby/Hibernate

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite e9105z CTO Desktop and migrated from Win XP to Vista Home Premium x64, with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Controller.  Whenever I come out of sleep- or standby-mode, I lose my Internet connection and have to either reboot my system or run the Windows Network Diagnostics to repair the network adapter settings.

I have tried several remedies available from the Internet; but unfortunately, nothing has resulted in a permanent solution.  I contacted my ISP provider (Mediacom) to ask if there was/is an issue with the firmware used to support my SBV5220 cable modem (e.g., non-compatibility with Vista) and they said there isn't.  To date, I've:

  1. Reinstalled network card driver.
  2. Checked and reset power options with USB CDC.
  3. Applied update for Windows Vista (Default Gateway Setting is Lost ) for x64-based Systems (KB933872)--received response that update does not apply to system.
  4. Reset IP configuration via Cmd line.
  5. Under the Power Management tab, unchecked the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in.

I access the computer several times a day and having to reset Internet connections has become extremely aggravating.  I hope there is a solution.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Returning from a 3-week vacation, during which my desktop was off, my local internet connection would no longer come active when it came out of hibernation.  The wireless functioned, but the local connection would not work unless I physically unplugged the cable from the router (Netgear) and reinserted it.

After several days of frustration I went into Device Manager, unchecked the  ethernet adapter option "allow the computer to turn off this device".

This seems to have cleared up the problem, at least so far...

    I am having a similar problem with the tap vpn interface. I have disabled all of the suggestions noted above..allow device to wake, firewalls nothing helped.

    The network adapter "TAP" is a vpn interface ..

    every time the computer goes to sleep or hibernate and is restarted the adapter properties need to be reset.. not really sure why but I have a procedure that at least allows me to reconnect to the vpn and connect to the servers I use

    The procedure is really retarded but works..

    from the command prompt <ipconfig /release"

    select the network adapter for me "Tap" select properties

    select ip4 properties (I notice every time i connect the properties are switched from dhcp to fixed ip" select dhcp.)

    select adapter disable

    from the command prompt <ipconfig /flushdns>

    select adapter enable

    restart vpnc service.

    for some reason the network adapter loses context with the dns. I have also changing the dns broadcast setting noted in the suggestions but none of this works..

    Try this approach which works for me (on a Windows Vista64 machine with SP2 and an NVIDIA nForce NIC). This was based on suggestions from another user:

    1)  Click Start -> Search [Device Manager] enter

    1. Expand Network Adapters, and pick the enabled adapter (for me an NVIDIA nForce)
    2. Right click and Open the Properties for it
    3. Click on the advanced tab and check the settings for (if you don't have NVIDIA this will probably be different, so try to find similar names, especially for #C):

       a) Low power Idle Mode:  Enabled

       b) Low Power State Link Speed:  Enabled

       c) Wake on LAN from PowerOff:  Enabled

    1. Click on the Power Management Tab.
    2. Check the box for "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power"
    3. Uncheck the box for "allow this device to wake the computer"
    4. Press Ok and you are done.

    The computer should be able to go into Sleep or Hibernate and have connectivity when it awakens.

    If "Wake on LAN" is enabled, then the network card _has_ to maintain connectivity when the computer is asleep.

    If "Wake on LAN" is disabled, then the network card can be shutdown and its settings dumped.

    Depending on the driver for your network adapter, the Wake on LAN settings might be on the power management tab for the network adapter in device manager.

    I can reproduce the problem behavior by turning off Wake on LAN.  I vaguely recall tinkering with it a few weeks ago around the time I started to have this problem and I'm very happy to have fixed it.

     

    I will give this a try to see if I can confirm it as well then.
