To access the System Recovery Environment in Windows 7, simply boot your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system; hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options Menu. There you will see a new option 'Repair Your Computer', select this option and hit 'Enter' on your keyboard.

Interesting.  Someone at another site posted with the same problem when helping a friend fix their Windows XP machine. 

I suggest starting with checking that there are no CDs or DVDs in the drives or removable drives (backups) plugged in to the USB ports.  If that is not the problem, see if this KB article helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315261/

    tried all sorts of fixes suggested on internet, including F8 Repair many times, did not work

    pulling hair out in frustration

    finally came across this on the net

    Fixing NTLDR is missing in Windows 7 :

    1.Insert the Microsoft Windows 7 installation DVD disc in the DVD drive, and then start the PC.

     2.Press a key when you are prompted and Select language, time, keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.

     3.Select Repair your computer

     4.Select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

     5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

     6.To Fix NTLDR is missing error in Command Prompt type this command and hit ENTER:

    bootrec /FixBoot

    1. Reboot

    Worked perfectly for me.

    Yippee!!

    Hopefully will work for you too.

    Note: originally the fix was for Vista but it worked with W7

    I'm not that technical especially when it comes to computers, mainly because I'm a mechanic. I have computers though at home and I would encounter this kind of scenario for XP as well as Windows 7. I often remedy this "NTLDR is missing" by taking out the RAM and disconnecting the cable from the HDD. When I put back the RAM and the cable, it fixes itself. I really don't have any formal training in computers and I have no explanation for this but it works for me. This is also not a band aid solution as the last time this happened for my XP was 9 months ago and up until now had no issues with it.

    change the boot order so that the drive windows is installed is at the top. it worked for me. i hope it works for everyone else too!
