Need Help !

Recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop using Vista operating system.

The DVD +-RW Device was working but has recently failed.

The Device Manager locates the Driver which is Optiarc DVD +-RW AD 7580A ATA Device

The Device Manager has a (-) marker which tells me the driver is not working.

I tried to update this driver but message received is "most recent driver already installed".

I opted to uninstall driver and restarted system.

Upon restart, system attemped to reinstall driver for my CD Rom.

I then received message " Drive device software was not sucessfully installed".

Also received message "Wndows cannot load the device for this hardware. Code 39"

At present my CD Rom device will not work.

I would appreciate anyone who has a solution to this problem.

Thank you in advance.

Did you recently install some new burner software? Several of the burner installs can cause error 39. You sould rightclick this link to another Answers thread about removing the "Upper Filters" and "Lower Filters"entries. You can remove those by creating the CMD file I will paste in below, created by William Keener.

  1. Carefully copy, and then paste the following three commands into Notepad:

reg export HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\ %userprofile%\desktop\CDFiltersBackup.reg

reg delete HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\ /v UpperFilters /f
reg delete HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\ /v LowerFilters /f

  1. Save the file on your desktop as DeleteCDFilters.cmd.
  2. Right-click the DeleteCDFilters.cmd file on your desktop, and then click Run as administrator.

Note After you run this script, any programs that installed custom CD/DVD filter drivers may not be able to use your CD/DVD until your reinstall those programs. If the command script doesn't resolve the problem, you can simply restore your custom CD/DVD Filter drivers by double-clicking the CDFiltersBackup.reg that the command script exports to your desktop.

(Soon we will be seeing a "FixIt4Me" button from his team to do this automatically.)

    SCPharmacist,

I recommend doing a **System Restore(More detail on this here),**and then making sure you have the updated device firmware from HP’s website.

Can you give us back ground information on what prompted you to check you device manager and uninstall your drivers? Was the device not functioning properly, were you receiving error codes? By (-) do you mean that the device tree was expanded or was there a red (X) next to the device? Also if you are still within the retail stores exchange period you might consider swapping it out.

Please provide us with the requested information so we may further troubleshoot your scenario.

Hello Mark:  What a marvelous little solution.  I found virtually identical symptoms when I began installing camera software from a data CD.  CD Drive made all the 'normal' sounds but never found any data.  Checked and found the CD Drive wasn't even being discovered by Windows (Vista).  Tried restoring/updating drivers, Windows responded that I have the most recent drivers.  Device Manager showed an exclamation point next to CD Drive, with the Code 39 message in properties.  Tried a system restore from about a month ago . . . still no-go.  Found your posting, followed instructions, back in business.  I have no idea of what I might have done to develop those filter entries.  Haven't installed any new software in quite some time . . but, hadn't used the CD Drive in quite some time either.  Thanks for your posting!

I had the same issue code 39 only with a matshita bd-mlt uj-220s ata device driver I cannot load any data disc at all Vista will not recognise them, I just recently had to restore it to factory settings because It for some reason would not start, I attempted several times to fix this and couldnt even get the login screen to come up I tried a system restore but vista didnt have any it was able to reach, the only option I was left with other than a expensive paperweight was a factory restore so I knocked the thing (sony vaio VGN-FZ285U) back to factory, That went ok it I removed all the BS programs that typically come on a new computer (again) and ran windows update (a total of 68 updates total) I was able to watch a DVD movie on it one time and then tried to load MS Office back on it and it wont even see a disc drive, I tried the filters thing to no effect, I tried the update to no effect I uninstalled and reinstalled  repeatedly I even bought a 30 dollar program that is supposed to fix stuff like this only for it to tell me its all up to date. Some one please help me on this I dont really want to trash the drive or replace it
