One Month Battery Life MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000

I purchased this mouse a few months ago, and use it daily.  I'm very happy with the performance, but not with the battery life.

I am forced to replace the battery every month, almost to the day.

The mouse is used primarily with my desktop system, both in my web development work, and general usage.  I estimate my active use at 8 hours daily, but my systems are powered on all the time.

I have used new name brand alkaline batteries (Energizer, Duracell) and the last 2 months, Energizer Lithium batteries, with no difference.

It's impractical for me to turn the mouse on and off throughout the day.

The packaging claims up to 10 months of battery life - obviously I'm not getting anywhere near that.

I have the latest intellipoint drivers and otherwise my Win 7/64 system is up to date.

Do you have any ideas why I'm having this issue, and what I might be able to do about it?

Thanks in advance - as I said, I love the mouse, but the battery costs are eating me alive!

Have you tried contacting MS support about getting it exchanged/replaced? How about the place you bought it? I've had a few wireless mice, and their batteries have all lasted longer than a month, but only one has lasted as long as 10 months. I have a MS Natural Wireless Laser 6000 that they last 6 months, almost to the day. But the batteries in my Logitech V470 Bluetooth Notebook mouse last about 4 months, and it's turned off more than on.

I think you have a defective mouse, but I'm sure neither your merchant nor Microsoft would take my word for it :-)

    Their customer support desks likely ran out of batteries.

    Throwing my 5 cents in.  I bought this mouse a few months ago to replace my 3500.  The rubber to hold it started falling off, but still worked fine until the rubber wheel started sticking and I could no longer use it.  I bought the 4000 because it was a little bigger but still portable to travel with.  I liked the 3500, the battery for me lasted for months and this was never shutting it off here at home, but as I ended up using a laptop for everything, the slightly bigger size seemed better this time around.  The 4000 has seen about 5+ batteries in 2-3 months of owning it, two in the past month.  I just put near batteries in about two weeks ago and just noticed the red light flashing already.  First time I thought I left it on in my backpack traveling and all the motion was activating it. But now I see it's something more.  It also doesn't work as well on various surfaces like the 3500 did. After reading all the posts here, and it being ongoing for so many years, I'm probably going to bring it back to Best Buy and see if I can trade it in, leaning towards a Logitech, which I had before the 3500 that last for months on one battery as well.  In fact I pulled out an old Logitech from my dead desktop that's been sitting for years, and it fired right up still. It was a toss up between one and the 4000 this time, but I figured I had good luck with the 3500 for many years, I'd go with the MS one again.  I've also tried Bluetooth before, but never seem to have luck with them actually connecting and remaining connected...if they connect, which is why I went back to a radio mouse.

    Ha, seems to work great. Thank you so much. If only there was some way that Microsoft could monitor chat rooms and incorporate solutions into their production process; I bought my mouse 2 months ago and it still has the exact same issue. Four years and counting!

    I think I have discovered why this mouse is draining every one's battery including mine. lol

    Here's what I did which has worked for me. I'm not sure if every mouse has the same issue.

    See in the pic, the silver rounded wire or the batt linkage on this particular mouse is way inside due to which the battery's positive terminal does not come in full contact with it, causing the drain. Using a small screwdriver, I pulled it out slightly and reinstalled the battery. Now the battery sits better and the mouse has stopped draining the batt and is working even with batteries it had drained before. Cheers.
