I have upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Professional. I used Windows Services for Unix in XP but have been informed this is not available for Windows 7. I do not see a NFS Client in the Windows 7 Professional version. What options are there?

Nope - this is wrong - it is only available as a non-installed component on Enterprise versions of Windows 7. As you can see from this screenshot is NOT available on Professional:

Please stop posting this incorrect information - Thank you.

Funny thing is I AM using MS security essentials... should I still get rid of my  not so awesome virus scanner   software?  LOL!

Well as it turns out the manufacturer for the video card had phone trouble shooting with me and determined it was a bad video card that i had less than a year and cost upwards of $385.  BUT... because i have two machines i had the luxury of popping the card out of the other machine and put it in this one, i then ran the updates and everything installed correctly and with out incident, so it kind of confirmed the bad  card right?  However at this point... knowing XFX is not the speediest of repairer, and my own curiosity , now that the drivers and updates have been caught up, i put that card back in the machine and not only did it work fine but the alternate install on another drive that had pushed me to do THIS install, had also then updated the driver and windows updates processed without a hitch,,,So ultimately i am in relatively good shape.  I now have a few other issues but they would be off topic for this thread... would love to find a better AV scanner though :-)  I know you are going to prefer we stick to MS products especially since it is a relatively full service scanner i only added a spy and ad scanner (Spy-bot S&D) and use a separate on demand.(on average once a month.... if the other catch anything then a prophylactic scan is also done) alternate scanner for root kits and such, for which i use the free Malwarebytes,

I didn't realize i could list the installed programs or I would have, since it was so few, but these have never presented problems before and i have been running them on one machine or the other for two or more years, so i didn't think it really pertinent to the problem.

I guess it still wouldn't hurt to set the NFS service to run anyway??? What do you think>  Would there be much advantage to have this set up and running if i am not encountering driver issues or other anomalous activities??  I had run in to numerous mentions of this while trouble shooting my problem in Google searches, and so many point me to here that i ended up posting my problem here.  So if this is helpful in other aspects of keeping my OS

"Tuned" i would appreciate knowing for sure what it would assist in if i set the NFS client up and keep it running.

Thank you all for your efforts, i had allot of trouble getting here when these answer notifications came in, and finally got past them so that i could access my log in info because like telephone numbers, nothing is kept in our heads any longer, we use so many memoery assisting devices that we do not think any more, or at least exercise our recall capabilities and like any other sub group of muscles, no matter how much you use the primary muscle these will become unreliable if you do not also use them regularly, and all my passwords  were stored in a browser i could not get to load before it would crash LOL!

Its an older version and almost being retied from support but it has all the tools i use regularly and those developers are no longer trying to keep up with the advancements the company has been pushing out so fast, and can no longer keep updating their free apps so the longer i can hold on to this to move up slowly to the next two upgrades, as they manage to catch up to their apps being compatible with the new browser versions.

Once again thanks for the insight and much other info in all the posts responding to this thread's primary question.

So sorry!  For some reason I saw "Windows 7 Professional" and read "Windows 7 Enterprise"!  DOH!

I believe the NFS client is only available in the Enterprise and Ultimate (what I have) versions.  Yes, yes, this is ridiculous!  To not include it in the Professional version is inexcusable!  (But for the fact that it's purely a marketing decision to get people to buy the more expensive version, knowing that Professional users are far more likely to need an NFS client!)

Just to be absolutely sure, run the following from the command line:

      dism /online /get-features /format:table

Are there any NFS features listed?  What about SUA?  (It's listed simply as "SUA".)

If they aren't listed,. then, no, they're not available!  The only way to get them would be to upgrade to one of the above versions.

    Sorry for the confusion.

You might look into installing Samba on your UNIX systems, so that your Windows systems can connect to your UNIX shares using SMB instead of NFS.  Not the answer you're looking for, but it's a solid, robust, and free solution.

    Good luck!
