I keep getting the error code 80073712 - windows component store is corrupt - when trying to install windows vista SP1 and also the Cumulative Security update for Explorer 7 (KB978207). Fails every time.

I folowed the advice and installed the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (did this twice) but still cannot download and install the updates - get error 80073712.

How can I fix the corrupt windows component store ?

thanks,

Dan

CMDC,

If the SFC was not able to repair files then the best thing to do is to reinstall Windows.  You can try running a Disk Error Check, if it corrects any problems then run the SFC again and then install and run the System Update Readiness Tool.  If there is still an issue with the SFC nto being able to complete then you should do a reinstall.

Are you the lowest of the low technician ranks?

Do you ever have a better answer than "if it doesn't work, re-install Windoze"?

Don't you think that askign the user to destroy his system and start over is an admission of failure by MICROSOFT? Why do you work there?

    Listening for a better suggestion.

    Hi ,

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods. For these methods to work, you must be logged on to your computer by using a computer administrator user account.

Method 1: Run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool with the sfc /scannow command

Although this method sounds highly technical, it is really a straightforward process that even the less experienced user can do. System File Checker merely makes sure that all system files are where they should be. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

This method is rated: Moderately easy

    Estimated time: 5-10 minutes

To run the System File Checker, complete these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.
    3. At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

If this method doesn’t help, then goahead with other steps and check if that helps.

Hi Mohammed, I was working on an old laptop and tried the SFC CMD and was not completely able to solve the 80073712 Error. It came back with a response of (found corrupt files but was able to fix some of them). Also details are included in the CBS.Log. OK so I am computer literate, but need to ask questions to get some things solved. What will be the next step in solving this issue? There are several things going on on this laptop. It belongs to my sister (don't know why people don't like to update).

My guess is that your file system is too corrupted to allow a system file check.  Have you tried a Check Disk command? Reimage offers a free scan of your system , but you have to pay to have the errors corrected by the Reimage software.

PS I would try too sfc /scannow while in the safe mode:  Restart and continually hit the F8 key until Windows starts in the safe mode. Then try running the sfc command as administrator.  Good luck.

Yes, I must agree with you 100%. I paid Microsoft $149 a year for services. At the end I had no choice to claimed a refund because of two reasons: 1) Microsoft still users third party software manufactures to solve their own problems and their are not solved, and 2) Those Engineers that are on line to solve your problems are not able to do it. This has been one of the greatest scams in history. It's a shame.

On the other hand I must say that there Windows has some good programs worht to buy. But I will never ever I will buy any operating system with the word of Microsoft on it.
