I am using Windows 7  and getting an error Code

WerFault.exe - Application Error

The Instruction at 0xfcf9c9fe reference memory at 0x00000001. The memory could not be written. Click to terminate program.

How do I fix this?

The werfault.exe is used for Windows Error Reporting. It is a feature that allows Microsoft to track and address errors relating to the operating system, Windows features, and applications. It gives you the option to send data about errors to Microsoft and to receive information about solutions.

You can access settings for Windows Error Reporting here: Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions > Change settings > Advanced settings

Try turning it off temporarily and see if this will fix the problem.

As a temporarily solution you can turn off error reporting service: press Win+R, type services.msc than find Windows Error Reporting service in the services list, right-click on it -> click Properties ->  open "Startup type" list and select "Disabled" -> press OK.

Then check and see if you are still getting the werfault.exe error on opening programs.

Since you have just installed Windows 7, please verify you have updated all of your device drivers to a Windows 7 version. If you cannot do so in normal mode, then go to safe mode and verify in device manager.

    I found what I think is what the MS solution refers to.

    It's related to the action center feature in Windows 7+ and error reporting.

    Windows 7 (Method 1):

    Open "Control Panel"

    Change view to "small/large icons"

    Click "Action Center"

    Click "Change Action Center Settings"

    Under Related settings Click "Problem reporting settings"

    Select "Never check for solutions"

    Click "OK"

    Click "OK"

    Then turn it back on...

    Windows 7 (Method 2):

    Open "Control Panel"

    Search (top right corner) "problem and error"

    Under Action Center Click "Choose how to check for solutions"

    Select "Never check for solutions"

    Click "OK"

    Turn it back on...

    At least this is what I understood the MS solution to be.

    The other thing it suggests is disabling the Error Reporting service through services.msc and installing drivers.

    I had same error ......i just run the drivers cd, came with my computer Dell inspiron 1545. ( i formatted computer few months ago and did not install drivers CD) If you don't have drivers cd, update drivers from website....All drivers and utilities.

    My laptop won't let me onto the control panel it also came up saying there was an application error with mom.exe and that my internet explorer came up I can't click on anything apart from my task manager!! HELP!!

    A lot of werfault.exe errors are based on drivers. Make sure you run Windows Update and all of your manufacturer software is up to date as well. Lenovo actually has some of these fixes on their web site because they have found the derivative of the problem in most cases. So check the manufacturer site for solutions as well.
