Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7 please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7 with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

I successfully resolved this problem by making the following changes to the default power management settings in my computer's AMI BIOS:

Change "ACPI Standby State" from S1 to S3 [see Note A below]

Change "EuP 2013" from Enabled to Disabled [see Note B below]

Change "Resume S3 By USB Device" from Disabled to Enabled [must disable EuP 2013 first]

Change "Resume S3/S5 By PS/2 Keyboard" from Disabled to Any Key

Change "Resume S3/S5 By PS/2 Mouse" from Disabled to Enabled

I can now wake my computer from sleep mode by hitting any key on my USB keyboard or by moving my PS/2 mouse. Prior to making the above changes, I would have to shutdown and restart my computer if it went in to sleep mode.

Note A - According to a "Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report" created by Windows 7 for my computer (see http://howtoinwindows.com/windows-7/troubleshooting-errors/powercfg-sleep-mode-power-problems/), "The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms."

Note B - According to http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/msi\_big\_bang-xpower\_review, "The European EuP 2013 mode, aka use-less-than-1W-of-power mode, is also on, which prevents USB devices from waking the machine. Here in America, we can use more than 1 watt on standby, so set the board to S3 standby, disable the EuP 2013 mode, and switch on 'wake on USB.'"

I hope this helps at least some of you who are having this problem.

Shawn, Shekhar; I'm having the same problem as Deadbolt but with a different Dell. It's a new Studio XPS 8000 with a clean (OEM) install of Windows 7. The display adaptor is a GeForce GT 220. Everything is up to date via Windows Update. The computer wakes up fine (I can even resume playing music) but the monitor remains asleep. I can't tell if it's the monitor that's the problem or the video card. The monitor is an LG Flatron.

I have the same problem except also when I boot my computer from a cold start my monitor also doesn't get a signal to come out of sleep mode. This is totally annoying me. I've read everything on this board and on many other sites.

Asrock p67 extreme4 gen3

I5 2500k

Hd 6850

Win7 sp1

Hi Deadbolt31313 ,Thanks for posting on Microsoft Answers!Shawn thanks for your inputs. Deadbolt31313 in addition to Shawn's advice I would also recommend you to enable this Display Adapter to wake the PC after sleep.

Follow the steps below:

Check if allow this device to wake the computer is checked in Device Manager.

Click Start, type Device manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.

Select keyboard, it will display your keyboard, right click and select ‘Properties’.

Select the ‘Power management’ tab.

Check the “Allow this device to wake the computer” check box.

Repeat these steps for Mouse and Network adapters as well.
