Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    What multiplier are you using? I've seen other posts where people have trouble with S3 sleep at 4.5Ghz and above regardless of PLL overvoltage being disabled or not, though I have gotten mine to work @ 4.7Ghz with it disabled.(4.8+ you'll likely need PLL Overvoltage on to remain stable), I normally just run at 4.5 though (45 x 100Bclk)  and it works 100% of the time even with the computer in the sleep state for several days in a row.

    Also is yours the B3 revision of the P67? My BIOS version is 1502, there's a couple of newer versions but I've not seen the need to flash the latest one as everything works fine.

    I'm not sure what multiplier you're talking about (I'm no tech expert, and am not trying to over clock). I have not changed any of the default settings in the BIOS other than those required to make my computer run. That is to say, I have essentially not changed anything from the defaults other than PLL overvoltage disabled. 

    I have tried 4 different BIOS versions. The 1502 (installed on board with delivery), I then upgraded to the 1850 hoping that would help. It didnt. I then tried the 1801 and the 1606. None worked, though when I switched from the 1502 to the 1850 the sleep issue changed slightly.

    ----- Both the 1502 and the 1606 bios settings, when trying to resume from sleep, the compute would appear to turn on, however no video displayed on screen, and USB ports not working. Nothing works until a force reboot.

    -----With the 1801 and the 1850 BIOS versions the computer will briefly (1/2 second) attempt to boot from sleep, then will shut down fully. 1 push of the power button, and the fans will spin up for about 4-5 seconds before the whole system shuts down again. At this point if I push the power button again, things will boot up normally, however I get a windows error that the system was not properly shut down.

    My W7 Professional 32bit HP Desktop kept adding problems to monitors failing to wake up -- IE9 wouldn't open common sites, HP dc5850 MicroTower would not shut down completely, Windows search and indexing had disappeared...  So, having tried every troubleshooting tool -- e.g., Mr. Fixit, scannow, bios tests --   I moved all files to a backup drive and reinstalled W7 Professional and all the updates. 

    DT is up now running faster than I can recall with Microsoft Security Essentials (in place of CA Internet Security -- a prime incompatibility suspect).

    I'm still having trouble stabilizing Outlook 2010 and syncing it to BB Torch.

    If there is one thing I would do differently in hindsight it would be not to upgrade to W7 from Vista, or from IE8 to IE9, until at least 3 years out from release date.

    K series Sandy Bridge CPUs have an unlocked multiplier for overclocking but obviously your system is not overclocked so I can rule the over 4.5Ghz issue out.

    My mobo is the P8P67 PRO revision 3.0 B3, I've noticed despite being in the same family there are different versions of the BIOs, some specific to each particular model.

    When you disabled PLL overvoltage did you do so with the 1502 version or only on the later ones?

    1502 is the one I'm currently running. I also have EPU disabled (my other settings would also be different but that is for overclocking and shouldn't be the reason mine works and yours doesn't.)

    Let us know how you get on with it!

    ALSO, JUST BUILT another computer with a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3R-B3 and 2600k i7 and NO issues with sleep and monitor waking up, would have to mess around with BIOS to see if I can make it not work but out of the box it does and with the same build of Windows 7 installed as my other ASUS comp  that originally didn't work until PLL Overvoltage was disabled
