Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    Same problem with my newly built pc; The PC itself powers on (fans running) but screen will not come back unless I restart.

    Same problem here except I have the problem on a laptop built in screen.  I have a Dell Latitude E6510 with Core i7 quad core hyper-threaded. The computer wakes up okay. I can see the screen that says restoring windows.  Then the screen goes dark from then on.  I tried hitting keys randomly and I managed to get the computer to say aloud the menu items available to me. Apparently I have activated some vision challenged user interface. It looks like the computer is running fine, it just wants me to navigate in the dark.  Only if I know the secret command to turn the screen on.

    My computer has waken up from sleep successfully many times before if I put it to sleep using the Fn F1 key on the laptop or select hibernate from the START menu. This time I left the computer unattended and it went to sleep by itself. Now it is in coma.  I have set my computer not to sleep if the AC adapter is plugged in. So this seldom happens to me because my computer usually does not sleep.

    I am so amused by the list of people saying me too from January 2010 up till April 2011.  That is 14 months without a resolution to the same problem.

    Just for the record, I also have this same issue, but the computer is still running XP sp2.  Only wanted to make the point that the issue is not isolated to Windows 7.  The problem manifested itself immediatly after I installed a new Nvidia GeForce (GT-520) video card and Samsung display.  Have not yet attempted any troubleshooting, however.

    Kris S, I have exactly the same problem (except single monitor) that you so carefully described last year (3/10/10) : the monitor doesn't awake from sleep, the forcefully power off, the "Resuming Windows", the 5 minutes before PC is responsive, the flashing underscore, Win 7 64 bit. Did you ever get this fully resolved? I know lots of others had similar problems; I'm responding to you because the symptoms you describe are identical to mine.

    As you, I also have an ASUS mobo (M4A88T-V EVO/USB3)

    In my case, the problem occurs infrequently, but it is a puzzling hassle when it does.
