Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7 please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7 with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

HP also replaced the memory modules with no change in behavior. I have 9GB of DDR-3 RAM. I am not sure if ACPI is used by this computer if that makes a difference.

My XP laptop doesn't seem to have these types of problems.

BTW - the sleep problem does not happen all of the time. It happens about 40% of the time and almost at random. I haven't found anything in common among the times when it fails - I have looked at applications running, hardware configuration, number of people logged on, background processes, network configuration, etc., etc., - even looked at time of day - no common threads.

The fact that it is happening on several different makes of computers all with different configurations, it appears the only thing that I see so far in common is the OS (including common drivers). This does not constitute proof by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a starting point for those who have resources to examine such things.

Meanwhile I'll just keep burning up unnecessary cycles with my "once green" machine!

My main system is W7 x64. Previously XP. My problem was solved with RAM replacement. It did have errors. Sleep now works perfectly.

A few peripheral drivers have Vista drivers.

nVidia 8600 GTS with latest nVidia drivers.

Gigabyte P35 MB F11 BIOS

Intel Q6600 processor

6GB Crucial Ballistic RAM.

705W OCZ PSU

5 HDDs - 3 SATA and 2 PATA

2 DVDs - both SATA

Magicjack - USB phone dongle

I do not run ACPI mode.

AND it all works.

Another system has no W7 or Vista display drivers so I never could fix that, but it had other issues. I went back to XP and it won't wake from standby in XP either.

Bottom line - W7 does support it properly - SOMETIMES.

XP also has issues with it SOMETIMES.

Does that make it an OS or driver or hardware issue ..........................

I also wish I knew why the cursor does NOT show when replying in THIS forum only. It is VERY aggrivating.

I have the exact same problem using an HP 9200 series desktop running W7 64-bit - occurs in sleep or hibernate modes. I have had HP replace the disk drive, motherboard and all of memory. I have also run it using two different graphics cards (both were NVidia GeForce but different models) and three different monitors from two different manufacturers - no help. HP claims that they may have a solution for W7 (32 bit) but I run W7 (64 bit). No help. This has been a problen with W7 since last October. My only "work around" is to not let the computer go to sleep. Kinda defeats all power saving intentions. MS has not been of much help either. The monitor companies point to the computer and graphic card makers, who point to MS who point back to "Drivers" or monitor/graphic cards problems. No one really seems has a clue what is happening or why.

The only work around I have found is to prevent sleep or hibernate.

My Macintosh has never had this problem using the same monitors.

Any help would be appreciated.
