Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    I've been having this problem ever since I installed Windows 7.  I have two monitors... the primary is on a VGA cable, and the secondary monitor is on an HDMI cable.  The monitors go to sleep after a period of time, but the computer does not.  When I move the mouse, the secondary monitor on the HDMI connection wakes up, but the primary monitor refuses to wake up.  It makes it very difficult to log in, because the secondary display is just blank.  Removing the VGA cable and plugging it in does not work.  The only thing that works is removing the HDMI cable... so that only the VGA is connected... then it seems to wake the VGA connected monitor.  Then I plug the HDMI back in and everything is back to normal.  BUT I'M SICK OF HAVING TO UNPLUG MONITOR CABLES JUST TO LOG IN.  This is a WINDOWS 7-instigated problem, for sure.  Same computer, same monitor setup, Windows 7 is the only uncommon factor.  So it's something with the windows 7 drivers or the OS itself.  Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 3540.

    Time to add my problem to the growing collection.  Just did a new build:

    Windows 7 64-bit

    Athlon II X3 435 2.9ghz

    6GB DDR3 RAM

    ATI Radeon 5750 1GB

    640GB Hard Drive

    ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO Motherboard

    Dual monitors: LG set at 1280x1024 (primary) and Hans-G set at 1440x900(secondary)

    Computer goes into sleep mode after the set time limit. When trying to wake it up, the PC responds, lights up and looks all happy, but the monitors just sit there.  I have to forcefully power it off to get it to come back on.  The funny thing is, when I turn it back on, I get a "Resuming Windows" on the screen and then it takes like 5 minutes before the PC is responsive enough to log on. At one point there is a flashing underscore in the top left of the screen.

    I'm clueless as to why this happens.  I have the latest drivers for everything.  Seeing all of the different hardware present in this forum, I'm assuming its a windows problem.  Still, I'm going to see if my BIOS needs and update and then if it still happens, I'm going to just disable sleep mode altogether.  If anyone has a solution, PLEASE let us know.

    same problem here.

    thought it was a viewsonic problem(well that was stupid because the monitor worked fine before).

    Tried flashing the graphics card(nvidia 8800 gtx)...removing the cards drivers with a driver cleaning tool...reinstalling...____ i even changed the monitor for an LG monitor...NOTHING helps.

    I was actually looking at a new ati card before i saw this post.I guess it's not just me that's having this problem.

    I'm guessing it's an update that ws installed during the last month or 2.

    Glad to hear the replaced card fixed your problem, Generichs. Beeping components are never a good sign! Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to fit with the rest of our collective experience. Any news from Microsoft on this issue Shekhar or Shawn?
