Unable to boot - Safe Mode stops after crcdisk.sys

same issue Vista 64bit stopped blue screen and majority of app freezes by

changing disk controller from SATA to IDE in bios

removing MSE and putting back on other anti-virus along with turning Windows Defender back on

turn off Aero features for Windows

Scandsk will not repair errors found on second drive, second drive runs fine via USB-SATA adapter just not through actual HD controller on motherboard

Cannot get into SAFE MODE because of crcdisk.sys lock up  

Defrag will not run on computer 

Solution imho DUMP VISTA IT'S ****!! We should all get free copies of 7 or even go backwards to XP

Too many things that go buggy in Vista to fix all of them, OS is shoddy programming.

If anyone else has NEW advice (as you can see most posters here and on other sites have tried all the RESTORE, VIRUS CHECK, CHECK DISK, ERROR REPAIRS etc etc. We don't need someone to keep repeating what we have already tried dozens of times. Please pose NEW advice, besides DUMP VISTA.

I have this exact same problem.  It started with a virus I still have.  I can't connect to the Internet when I start normally.  Norton has been altered to where I can't get to it.  I started in "Safe Mode" and ran recommended programs to get the virus.  Nothing has worked and I can't start in "Safe Mode".  The Windows repair to is working as I type.  I am currently using the repair tool in the "Safe Mode" options menu.  OK.  That didn't work.  I also followed the suggestions in the first reply.

Any ideas?

I've tried this with my daughter's computer -- it got into this after doing a Windows Update on her Vista machine -- but I can't get it to boot into safe mode even with this disk.  Does anyone have any other ideas for getting to safe mode so I can try the other suggestions?

(It's a Toshiba; I've gone into Toshiba's System Recovery, and I can get into Command Prompt that way.  I've run chkdsk c: /f/r, but that hasn't worked.  I can't run sfc /scannow.  Should I try deleting crcdisk.sys and see if it gets restored?)

It seems there are many different issues that can cause these symptoms, but as far as I can tell they are all hard-drive related. I had the same symptoms so I'll post my solution.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop

I was reinstalling Vista Home Basic on a new sata hard drive after the old one failed, and after encountering en error message while installing I tried using a the Vista Home Premium install disk I have for my other computer instead. I got no error message but the installation foze somewhere in the finishing steps, and after restarting I ended up with the neverendig startup bar, and - in safe mode - the crcdisk.sys freeze.

 

I suspected that the AHCI setting in the bios had something to to with it, but when I tried changing it to ATA i got an error message saying 'drive not found' or something of the like. I then tried changing the setting from AHCI to ATA and then reinstalling, and apparently this solved everything, because I reinstalled Vista Home Basic without any error messages and it seems to be working fine.

After I tried so many things the one it works for me was this. My Dell Inspiron 1720 is working again after it was unable to boot after the crcdisk.sys

I did the changed as you explained and now it is running nicely.

The problem was, the laptop came with Windows Vista installed, but somebody change to XP (I don't blame it), so after a while it got virus and problems started, so no XP disk only Vista. After re-installing Vista the crc problem started, did what you post and now is working.
