Unable to boot - Safe Mode stops after crcdisk.sys

I've been getting a few computers having this problem.

After searching and trying for hours I descided to reinstall windows.

This actually works fine and while having the "windows.old" folder there's no need to spend hours trying to backup files as you can just copy-paste it from there.

this IS a vista problem. I have never had such a problem using Windows 7.

I have a similar issue with my vista 32 bit laptop hanging after the crcdisk.sys in safe mode. My interest is also about your statement re: "windows.old". Is this created by installing the OS afresh? This is important to me as I have not backed up a lot of very important recent files.

Any help from the community in clarifying this much appreciated.

Pull the drive and back up your files to another machine before you do anything. Optionally, also take a full disk image, which will make reinstalling much easier. 

After your files are safe, run tests on the drive (Seatools is good for this). I just had this problem on a Win7/64-WinXP/32 dual boot system, and the drive was incurably rapidly fading.

Get that data backed up before you do anything, because anything you do will lessen the chances of saving data on a failing drive.

I just fixed this problem a few hours ago. I did not have a windows vista installation cd nor did my acer come with a recovery cd. 

I had to do some searching for a "Vista Recovery Cd". The file should be around 120mb. Burn it as ISO onto a cd and boot off the cd. Repair/Restore did not work so I ran command prompt as the last option in the recovery menu.

I typed in "bootrec.exe /fixmbr" and "bootrec.exe /fixboot". Restarted and problem gone. I hope this works for you.

The Problem from Windows is that the policy is that all products must be work together with explorer and internet explorer, is one in this chain with a error all ist stop. The system is not error tolerant !! The software is not good on the border of every program exact definitiv and jump not to a special error handler. Learn with a flow chart than we would like not more  to kill you if we work a week to restart our computers

original title: Windows Vista 32-bit crashes as system is loading. Safe mode hangs after crcdisk.sys loads.  System restore also fails.

My computer (an HP m9200t) no longer fully boots after installing a new windows update.  When turned on the computer will begin to load windows and allow me sign in.  However, about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after signing in I can no longer interact with my desktop (although I can interact with programs that automatically load upon startup, like windows live messenger).  I sometimes receive a screen that says "kbd.exe failed to initialize properly".  I have tried to restore my system to a point before the update loaded, but I am told my file system is corrupt.  When I run a system diagnostic, I am told there is a problem with one of my hard drives.  I have also tried to boot in safe mode, but the system hangs immediately after loading crcdisk.sys

I too was beset by "system hangs immediately after loading crcdisk.sys" while booting Vista into Safe Mode. I could not load and sign in normally however, system would freeze immediately upon display of the green progress bar. My problem arose after installing a new version of the video driver but i've come to the conclusion this was only coincidental. I've never figured out what caused the problem to surface, but I have found a remedy which caused it to go away:

Reset motherboard BIOS values to Defaults (System "Optimal")

I kid you not. Machine would not boot any OS I tried except DOS and I tried Vista Setup, Vista Recovery, Win7 Setup, and various flavors of Linux. All the failures were hanging after basically the same thing, loading a disk driver or some sort.

I don't remember now where I got the idea to look at the BIOS but once I did I got the idea to reset it after reading the following in the BIOS manual:

Load Optimal Defaults

This selection allows you to reload the BIOS when problem occurs during system booting sequence. These configurations are factory settings optimized for this system.

I wish I had found that before I spent the better part of two days troubleshooting this problem. And somewhere inside those two days I visited this site and saved it for reference. So now I've come back to share my solution in hopes that it might help somebody else avoid wasting their two days or more.

1. Booted into BIOS Setup by repeatedly pressing the Delete key after system power on.
2. Went to the Exit menu.
3. Selected Load Optimal Defaults.
4. Selected Save Changes and Exit.
5. Rebooted normally selecting Start Windows Normally at the Windows Error Recovery dialog.

Problem Solved!
