Unable to boot - Safe Mode stops after crcdisk.sys

Hi Everyone,

I know this is years old now but I had the same thing hapen to me on my Windows 2008 R2 Server.

I couldn't even boot from the Original 2008 DVD, It would get up to the Moving Graphic Windows Logo Screen and then the system would just restart at the Cold boot BIOS screen.  I checked all the BIOS settings and couldn't find anything that even looked like a problem.  (This machine is an old Dell 6400 server and the BIOS is really simple).

Different from what the other users here have reported I have a RAID Array and ran a full diagnostic on the raid set and after hours of looking it couldn't find any problems.  At this stage I still thought it is probably a corrupted file which is why I tried to boot from the install disk.

Just for fun I tried booting from an old XP disk into the setup routine and that worked OK.

Of course I didn't actually install XP as I was still hoping to save the previous system.

Again just for fun I popped out my SCSI card and re-seated it again.  The SCSI card doesn't run much more than the DVD drive these days as the RAID controller is completely separate.

Much to my disbelief the machine booted and is now running perfectly.

Who would have thought :)

Hello, I am attempting to fix my wifes Dell Inspiron 1525 32-bit Vista Home Basic laptop.  She has been complaining that the computer doesn't shut down completely.  When she is forced to force the computer off, it no longer powers up again properly.

When I first started looking into the problem, I noticed that the computer got hung up after attempting to start up in safe mode (this is what led me to this site).  I noticed that the computer got hung up at "crcdisk.sys" and after a relatively short time period, it appeared to reboot properly.  At that time, the computer seemed to be operational.  As I tried to shut down the computer down again, I was required to force it off and in turn no longer started up properly... vicious cycle.

Once I got the computer up and running again, I was able to run "sfc /scannow" and got the below log of "corrupt files";

It seems there are many different issues that can cause these symptoms, but as far as I can tell they are all hard-drive related. I had the same symptoms so I'll post my solution.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop

I was reinstalling Vista Home Basic on a new sata hard drive after the old one failed, and after encountering en error message while installing I tried using a the Vista Home Premium install disk I have for my other computer instead. I got no error message but the installation foze somewhere in the finishing steps, and after restarting I ended up with the neverendig startup bar, and - in safe mode - the crcdisk.sys freeze.

 

I suspected that the AHCI setting in the bios had something to to with it, but when I tried changing it to ATA i got an error message saying 'drive not found' or something of the like. I then tried changing the setting from AHCI to ATA and then reinstalling, and apparently this solved everything, because I reinstalled Vista Home Basic without any error messages and it seems to be working fine.

After I tried so many things the one it works for me was this. My Dell Inspiron 1720 is working again after it was unable to boot after the crcdisk.sys

I did the changed as you explained and now it is running nicely.

The problem was, the laptop came with Windows Vista installed, but somebody change to XP (I don't blame it), so after a while it got virus and problems started, so no XP disk only Vista. After re-installing Vista the crc problem started, did what you post and now is working.

• If you don't have either disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk usinghttp://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer).

I've tried this with my daughter's computer -- it got into this after doing a Windows Update on her Vista machine -- but I can't get it to boot into safe mode even with this disk.  Does anyone have any other ideas for getting to safe mode so I can try the other suggestions?

(It's a Toshiba; I've gone into Toshiba's System Recovery, and I can get into Command Prompt that way.  I've run chkdsk c: /f/r, but that hasn't worked.  I can't run sfc /scannow.  Should I try deleting crcdisk.sys and see if it gets restored?)

Pull the drive and back up your files to another machine before you do anything. Optionally, also take a full disk image, which will make reinstalling much easier. 

After your files are safe, run tests on the drive (Seatools is good for this). I just had this problem on a Win7/64-WinXP/32 dual boot system, and the drive was incurably rapidly fading.

Get that data backed up before you do anything, because anything you do will lessen the chances of saving data on a failing drive.
