Windows has detected an IP address conflict

I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical.  If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on.  If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

    Not helpful, this glitch wastes an enormous amount of time.  I already power on and off to fix it, and this doesn't always work.  My husband has a MAC and I have a PC - we are the only people on our router!  My husband NEVER has this problem!

    i have the same probelm, i have tried that ipconfig/realese and done ipconfig/renew 

    buti i get an message that says

    Can not perform operations on the Wireless network connection while the medium is disconneclet.

    Can not perform operations on the Local Area Connection while the media is offline.

    1: The system can not find the file specified.

    how do i fix this? It is really annoying

    I have been suffering with this issue ever since I got a new Win7 laptop from work last Fall.  The IT helpdesk at my work is "helpless".

    This happens...

    • wired
    • wireless
    • home office
    • coffee shops
    • office 
    • hotels
    • up and down the east coast

    I have tried 

    • /release
    • /renew
    • /dnsflush

    a million times with no consistency.  I shut down the pc and that usually works but it wastes a lot of time.  

    I do use a CISCO VPN and I only the message when I'm logging into that.  I don't get it when I'm wired/wireless'd to the internet.

    I've reset the wireless modem to factory settings. 

    Nothing is consistently helping.
