I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

Go to your control panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections > right-click your active network (wireless or local area) > properties > Networking tab > look for "Internet Protocol Version 4" choice on the white scrolling box >click it> Continue on one of two cases:
1- "Obtain IP address automatically" is chosen > SOLUTION: just reconnect to your network (disconnect and connect again)
2- "Use following IP address" is chosen > SOLUTION: either change the last number in the IP address field (first line) or simply chose the "Obtain IP address automatically"
If "Windows" is smart enough to identify that there's a problem, why isn't it smart enough to tell you EXACTLY what it is? This is a -very- irritating thing about Microsoft products. Which IP addresses are duplicates? Which machines have duplicate addresses? I feel clever coders go out of their way to make these things obscure.

..constant intrusive problem when making connection with Vista; "another computer...same IP address" .....
How do I fix this ? The System Event Log story is far too complicated for me.
