Windows has detected an IP address conflict

I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical.  If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on.  If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

    Steve, I am using an HP netbook using Verizon Wireless Broadband service.  There should be no other computers using my network since my connection is digital and this is a home computer.  Don't know why I am getting the "windows has detected an IP address confliuct" message. I am using Windows 7. I know very little about this, but could it be my backup system, Mozy, creating this meeeage? Any ideas?

    I have been having the same problem with my windows 7 Laptop but at my work location another work location and a friends wireless router so just wondering if it could actually be all three locations or something in the settings on my computer when I recently had to replace my hard drive and reinstall everything.  I am still able to go online but it's just annoying and I keep wondering what is making this happen

    This message means more than one computer is using the same IP address, which is resulting in a conflict.

    In order to resolved this issue, u must make sure that each computer/ network device is assigned with an unique IP address.

    Trying releasing an renewing the ip address of ur computer if u are using a DHCP based ip assignment.  Issue the follwing commands from DOS:

    ipconfig/release

    ipconfig/renew
