Windows has detected an IP address conflict

I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical.  If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on.  If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

    I get this message all the time. As far as I am concerned it is just an annoying pop-up that otherwise affects nothing. Unless you know it is causing specific problems don't worry about it.

    Although we see you are trying to act like you are helping, you are really not. Why post here if you have nothing useful to say?

    Anyways... Back to the issue.

    This has happened quite a few times. I woke my pc from sleep to reveal that nasty conflicting ip address message and when I did another computer who was on a VPN was suddenly kicked off and locked out. Had to restart other PC and relogin to VPN service. The real problem here is that the other PC is a business PC and this affects time, pay and ability to save work which means this costs us money!!!

    Any solution to this?

    Should i change the Link-local IPv6 Address because that is the only one that looks distinct? Also, how would one go about changing these local addresses safely? This is what i get...

       Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :

       Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : (removed for safety? :p)

       IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.3

       Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

       Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
