I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

Could this be caused by wi-fi? My usb modem is connected to my wi-fi router and I open the wi-fi whenever I want to browse the internet through my smartphone. The ip address on my smartphone is 192.168.2.101 while on my desktop pc is 192.168.2.100.
The message may lead you to believe that there is more than one computer on your network with the same IP address. After installing itTunes so I could tether my iphone via the USB connection I started receiving this error message.
Most of the responses I read were pointing to a lot of things you cannot control so I started to look at things I could change.
I went directly to the network connection I was currently using (my iphone). I opened Network Sharing Center (Windows7 on my laptop). My current connection was shown as Local Area Connection2. Left clicking on that opens the properties screen left clicking on the properties tab will open the configuration panel. The panel will display your current installed protocols and the check marks indicate which ones are being used. In my case IPV4 and IPV6 were both installed and being used. Unclick them one at a time and see which one is necessary to keep your connection up. When you only have one selected and your connection is still active the error will cease and desist. In my case IVP6 was the one that had to go.
Windows does not discriminate between devices each one you hook up and install drivers for will load the protocols it needs but the other protocols will still remain active until you deactivate them. Generally the oldest protocol will work for all.
