I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

I think you may have accidentally answered the problem, is it posible that Another computer on your neighbors network, or outside of your neighbors network is Boot-legging like you, and has the same IP address as your computer, or one of the computers on your neighbors network? I do know that some of my neighbors was using ( without permission) my systems for free internet access. My system is password protected to authorize users only. My son just received a new laptop for his birthday and he is a school teacher so he connected to his schools academic system. And then that same message started to appear on my home network systems again. Checkout who has (public) access inside your computer.
I never had the IP address conflict problem until today. I upgraded my Verizon modem from VL600 to the new Novatel. Now every time I connect I get the message. Let's Get something straight....I ONLY HAVE ONE COMPUTER!!!! After reading all of the threads in this "situation room", I have come to the conclusion that MicroSoft has a definite problem, and obviously do not have a clue on how to fix it! I started writing programs in 1974 (HP, TI, & Radio shack TRS-80) Been through a lot of problems with DOS, & Windows (3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, & 7), but have never seen MS totally ignore a problem like this in the past. Have received that message for years, and as you said it has not cause any performance problems on my systems network, so I have just disregarded it. Looked up all my systems IP addresses, and they are all different, so who knows why that message appears?
I too have two computers in my home, so not surprised that "Another computer has the same IP address". Of course! This annoying message also staes that I have signed in on Instant Message, which I have not. How do I get different IP addresses?
