I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Since very recently an unknown device keeps popping up in the device manager every time I start Win. It's reported location is within the front USB root hub but I haven't changed there anything lately. The device status reports "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)". I can uninstall/disable it but it will get picked up again the next time I reboot. All other usb devices (mouse, keyboard, web camera, APC UPS, external drive, printer) work fine. How do I get rid of this nuisance so that it doesn't reappear?

If the problem coincided with hooking up the APC UPS that may indicate the problem is with the UPS.

Somewhat similar situation discussed in the following link:

Your situations seems similar as from the "System Information" file the "problem device" has an Error Code "This device is working properly" yet remains an "Unknown Device".

I would suggest to detach the APC UPS from the computer and uninstall any related software.

Restart the computer and see if the "Unknown Device" problem resolves.

    The device is showing up with a  DeviceId string starting with USB\VID_0000&PID_0000, which does not identify the manufacturer.

    However it may be related to a Logitech webcam.

    Is there such a device now connected to the computer?

    Have there been any issues with the webcam?

    Also, is there a Kingston Data Traveler flash drive presently connected?

    Also, have you made any changes in the BIOS recently?

    Unfortunately that is not giving too much information. 

    Can you do the following?:

    Start > type msinfo32 in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > File > Save > then save as an .nfo file

    Then make the resulting .nfo file available via Windows Live SkyDrive.

    In the Device Manager can you double-click the unknown device  > Details, then select "Hardware Ids"

    What information is given?

    Hardware Ids                                                     USB\UNKNOWN

    Manufacturer                                                      (Standard USB Host Controller)
