I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Since very recently an unknown device keeps popping up in the device manager every time I start Win. It's reported location is within the front USB root hub but I haven't changed there anything lately. The device status reports "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)". I can uninstall/disable it but it will get picked up again the next time I reboot. All other usb devices (mouse, keyboard, web camera, APC UPS, external drive, printer) work fine. How do I get rid of this nuisance so that it doesn't reappear?

If the problem coincided with hooking up the APC UPS that may indicate the problem is with the UPS.

Your situations seems similar as from the "System Information" file the "problem device" has an Error Code "This device is working properly" yet remains an "Unknown Device".

I would suggest to detach the APC UPS from the computer and uninstall any related software.

Restart the computer and see if the "Unknown Device" problem resolves.

    I am also facing same problem with my usb port in front panel of cabinet. I have done a BIOS recovery from a Kingston Data Traveller 4GB pen drive. Rest of the problem is already discussed above. Front USB port is totally dead.

    Yes, I have a Logitech webcam and it works fine. I tried to unplug it, disable the unknown device and reboot but it didn't help. The problem with the unknown device started when I tried to hook up the APC UPS to my PC, whereas the webcam had been there before and didn't cause any nuisance.

    There is a Kingston flash drive connected to a usb too but it is a very recent addition to my hardware profile, introduced after the issue with the unknown device arose.

    I have never made any changes to BIOS. Maybe I should to get it fixed? But I am not sure I have the skills..

    So, I am quite lost and, despite all the useful bells and whistles that Win 7 offers in comparison with its predecessors, it seems like fairly simple issues cannot be troubleshooted effectively...
