On my machine (Windows 7, 64 Bit) the TrustedInstaller.EXE is permanently active. The amount of used CPU changes permanently. 2 seconds 0 % then up to 50% (I have a dual core) for a second then down to 0.
Rebooting the machine did not help. Also a complete Virus scan was negative.
I have monitored the process with the Process Explorer tool. I can see that the process always access the same Registry key when it gets active. The key is
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.

in the meantime I have found the process that was responsible for the trustedinstaller activities. It was the xenservice.exe that was installed together with the Citrix XenCenter on my machine. I have killed this process and suddenly the trustedinstaller.exe stopped its activities. So the problem is solved now because the XenCenter can work without this process and I will remove it from the auto

Two MS MVP players have encouraged me to let it try to update for at least 24 hours nonstop. I set power options to never sleep but screen dim okay. Started trying for updates at 4 pm yesterday and this morning at 6am I see 214 of 241 updates downloaded and installed!! :-)
However I got my first ever "Low Memory" message when I took a look. Not much I can do about that except let it run for another 12 hours I guess.
Don't give up - for whatever reason Update is just taking an extremely long time to do its job.
Maybe due to so many people upgrading to Win 10?? I have no clue. Good luck with your wife's.
NeilJin, Well sir, thank you once again for encouraging me to wait it out! I did just that and let it run since 4pm yesterday (now 6am) and surprise, surprise, this morning it is installing 214 of 241 updates!!!
When I look at installed updates most of them are pending with several successful. However this morning I got my first ever LOW MEMORY notice on this laptop. I killed everything I could, changed performance options, shut down Defender's live shield, etc. to regain memory but it is going to be another long morning waiting it out.
I had written this off as too problematic to continue BUT since you wrote I thought, what have I got to lose at this point and did follow your suggestion. Had to let you know and thank you once again.
I do not know yet if this will be 100% successful or not BUT it is the best result so far as far as getting updates downloaded - if all install well I will close this case out.

BAHhahaha my wife's W7 laptop just started to do this with the installer and svhost. All she does is check her email with it.
Can't even do that now with 100% CPU usage going on for 12 hrs.
Time to teach her Linux Mint.
