when I delete a file in windows explorer it still shows there - I have to switch to a different directory and back, then the file name of the deleted file disappears. How can windoes explorer be configured so that deleted files disappear there immediately?

Hello Everyone,

As TavisB said that this didn’t occur on his guest account before he reinstalled. That means that a corrupted profile can cause this issue, let’s try creating a new account to see if that solves the problem. If the new account works correctly, I’ll provide steps to transferring over your user files.

·         Click Start

·         Enter User Accounts into the search field

·         Press Enter on your keyboard

·         Click Manage another Account

·         Click Create a new account

·         Type the name of the user account

·         Click the account type (make it administrator if you are replacing an administrator account)

·         Click Create Account

·         Log off the current user

·         Log into the new user

Try to replicate the problems experienced by your original profile. If the problem doesn’t occur then you just have to switch your documents over to this profile.

·         Click Start

·         Click Documents

·         Click Tools (Press Alt if Tools isn’t visible)

·         Click Folder Options…

·         Click View

·         Click Show hidden files and folders

·         Clear Hide protected operating system files

·         Click OK

·         Navigate to this location C:\Users<old username>

·         Select all files and folders except the Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, and Ntuser.ini files

·         Click Edit (Press Alt if not visible)

·         Click Copy

·         Locate the C:\Users<new username>

·         Click Edit (Press Alt is not visible)

·         Click Paste

·         Log off the new user

·         Log back into the new user

Hope that helps, look forward to hearing back from you.

I just now started seeing this issue on several Windows 7 Pro machines.  For me there are 2 oddities.  The deleted file icons persist only in the "C:\Users[username]\Documents" root folder.  It does not happen when files are deleted from folder inside of that folder or from other folders on the drive like "C:\temp".  And it only happens when the display sort order is by date.  If the display sort is by name the deleted file immediately disappears.

Hi, I found a solution for my problem in another forum...

Go to Tools/Folder Options/ General Tab, and at the bottom, in the 'Navigation Pane', make sure 'Show all folders' and 'Automatically expand to current folder' are checked.

    I have the answer.

    1. In the documents library, right click and select 'properties.'
    2. From the 'Optimize library for...' drop down menu, change the setting from 'documents' to 'general items.'
    3. Thank me.

    You're all welcome :-)

Well, I tried it but it doesn't seem to work (i,e. a word document temporary file remained after I closed Word).  When I went to delete the temp file, I got the message that it was already gone.  I will pursue this further.  BTW I (howardthetechie1) am the same guy as the older postings under howardthetechie.  For some reason, this Board wouldn't let me re-use the name
