How do I know what the CIFS sign is

Greetings! I just bought one of those networkable blu ray players... I have access to my portable network drive and thus are able to watch downloaded movies... Could you define  how to log in to my  network ... the bluray player asks for a "cifs sign in" in order to stream from my laptop... In lamen terms... I dont know what would the CIFS siign in name would be... How do I know what it is? I cant figure out what or where it will be...

Common Internet File System (CIFS), a protocol that defines a standard for remote file access using millions of computers at a time. With CIFS, users with different platforms and computers can share files without having to install new software.

I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the device for CIFS sign in details, also look for the CIFS information from the user manual.

    Like the majority of people that have responded to this thread, I too purchased an LG Blu-ray player (model BD670) and encountered the same “CIFS Sign In” dilemma. Reading down through this thread, there seems to be several different approaches as to solving this problem;  Creating a new / guest user, Uninstalling Windows Live Sign-In Assistant and any other windows live products, Editing the Registry, and Editing Windows Media Player settings.

    In my case, all I want to do is be able to access my libraries, eg. ‘My Pictures’, ‘My music’, ‘My videos’, etc. which reside on the C drive. My question is which one of the (above) scenarios / fixes would best fit my situation, or is there another solution to this problem?

    By the way, my OS is Windows 7 HP (64 bit), I also quizzed LG regarding the ‘Nero MediaHome Essentials’ software that came with my BR player. According to their support, this software was not necessary when running Windows 7, since sharing is incorporated into the OS.

    The answer is as simple as knowing which user ID you use to logon to Windows and the password. That is it. Type the same user ID and password that you use for Windows 7 and it will be fine. At least this is what I have done as I wanted to do exactly the same thing as you. It worked like a charm.

      However, I tried your suggestion (Type the same user ID and password that you use for Windows 7 ) but with no success. I have contacted LG support regarding this CIFS login issue. They have basically washed their hands of the problem, blaming it on Windows.

     I also created another User on my system as per 'one 1hundred's' solution posted on an earlier thread. When I entered this information into the LG Blu-ray's CIFS Login screen, it too failed.  

      Any further assistance w/ this problem will be greatly appreciated!

    Your suuggestion saved me.  I had been trying for a couple of hours to figure this out. I even called LG twice and was a total waste of time.  Their support person actually told me that it was not their problem and to install Nero.

    In my case, I had a guest user already set up on my computer but with no password set. After trying multiple times to log in as guest with no password, I finally decided to set up another user ID WITH a password.  Tried that combination and it worked perfectly.  So for anyone who tries this solution, I suggest you be sure to actually create a password for that user.

    Would you do me a favor, could you tell me what your OS is? Also, see if you have “Windows Live Sign-in Assistant” loaded on your system? The reason I ask is that I’ve found conflicting opinions as to whether this app is required in this situation …Thanks!
