How do I know what the CIFS sign is

Greetings! I just bought one of those networkable blu ray players... I have access to my portable network drive and thus are able to watch downloaded movies... Could you define  how to log in to my  network ... the bluray player asks for a "cifs sign in" in order to stream from my laptop... In lamen terms... I dont know what would the CIFS siign in name would be... How do I know what it is? I cant figure out what or where it will be...

·         Who is the manufacturer of the Blu-ray device?

Common Internet File System (CIFS), a protocol that defines a standard for remote file access using millions of computers at a time. With CIFS, users with different platforms and computers can share files without having to install new software.

I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the device for CIFS sign in details, also look for the CIFS information from the user manual.

    I was having the same problems as you guys with the LG BD570. Here's what I was able to come up with to stream from laptop to the LG

    BTW, I'm using Windows 7 Premium Home

    ** First make sure your computer & LG player are both part of the same network. If you're not sure lookup "setting up a home network" on this site and get that setup first!

    1. Open My Computer, then double click C: Drive
    2. Double click users

    3) Right click on your username (this is your login name for Windows)

    1. Highlight 'share with', then select 'Homegroup (read)'
    2. Give the PC a few seconds to finish configuring (if you're asked if you're sure you want to share, click 'yes')
    3. Close out 'My Computer'
    4. Open Windows Media Player (I have version 12.07)
    5. In the upper left hand corner, click the 'Stream' button
    6. Select 'Turn on media streaming with Homegroup'
    7. Select the folders you wish to share (ex. pictures, music, videos, etc)
    8. Click 'next'
    9. Either write down the password shown or choose the 'change your password' button to change it to something you'll remember.
    10. Click 'Finish'
    11. Here a menu pops up which allows you to name your Library; select 'Local Network' at the 'Show Devices On' section.
    12. Also on this menu beside 'Media Programs on this PC...', make sure 'Allowed' is selected.
    13. Click 'OK' at bottom of window
    14. In the upper left of WMPlayer, select 'Stream' again; This time make sure 'Automatically allow devices to play my media' has a check mark beside it. (If not, click it so it is checked)
    15. Now go back to your LG blu-ray, cycle off the power (if not already), restart the player. Then go to the Home Link Menu that lists the computers on your network. You should see your PC name & a Windows Media icon on screen.

    Select the Windows Media icon and your music should show up on screen.

    **Note: I found that my LG player did not even ask for the password, but yours may?

    Yes me too and it's driving me mad...Where on my PC (Windows 7 HP) would I find the CIFS sign in ID and password ??

    PS.Yes I bought the LG Network Blu Ray Home Cinema, all good but can't sign in...grrrr!!!!

    I got my LG BR Player back in 2010/12, everything was working fine, not once asked me to log in !! Than we got a new laptop with Windows 7 HP, now the BR asking for CIFS login ! Why ? Even to the location shared on my subnet with full access, full right !? What now ? I have not changed anything on the other 2 PC !

    Finally figured it for XP.... (works on BD570)

    You have to open port 445 on your pc if firewall is active on the PC. It is used by MS directory service and needed for file sharing. Make sure it is not exposed to the outside world, i.e. your PC should be behind NAT router.

    on cifs login - user name - <computer name>&lt;user name> e.g. myhomepc\jdoe

    password - <password> or leave empty if you do not use a password to login in XP.

    Now any directory with "read" permission to "everyone" will be displayed and supported content can be played from that directory.

    You do not need to install nero media home essentials.
