How to fix "Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working" ?

Windows photo gallery is one of several programs I use while working with my photo files and I find it useful, is some instances more than the expensive programs. But it has stopped working and I'm looking for a fix, preferably without having to reinstall the operating system and having to reload everything on my hard drive. Anyone have any suggestions? I can still open files and edit them, just can't "go to the gallery".

Hi Photofan,

Do you have another user account that you can try Windows Photo Gallery and see if you get the same error message?  If you do try it with another account and don't get the message try going through the following steps and see if it resolves your issue.

    1. Click the Start orb

    2. Type folder options in the Start Search box, and click the Folder Options program

    3. Select the View tab

    4. In the Advanced Settings window, underneath Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders

    5.  Click OK

    6.  Navigate to the following folder ( %user% is the name of the account having the problem):

    C:\Users%user%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery

    7.  Copy any files in here to another location as a back up and then delete them from the Windows Photo Gallery directory

Once the files are deleted, try to start Windows Photo Gallery.

After that go back in to folder options and select Do not show hidden files and folders

    Nope this did not fix the corrupted files. I just re-installed  win 7 x64 home prem.

    ~~  Can I just uninstall the update(s) that caused this issues?

    I know it was 4.27.12

    Hello I have been trying to repair photo gallery since 4.27.12 after windows automatic updates messed both photo gal & movie maker up. restored to previous version from c: app data....local..."where the file was located" I knew immeadiately that they were corrupt by the icon turning into a pc of paper. Finally after taking 2 days to uninstall, tried reinstalling 2x's not luck...then uninstalled & re-installed from clean boot, no luck, then restore to previous version....gaot movie maker to work & bot icons finally came back. BUT photo gallery is not functioning. movie maker is but photo gallery only will open pics in slide show. If I click the pic nothing...not even an eroor message. weird. So I called MS spoke to Level 2 tech....no luck there either....he reinstalled windows 7 system files....& made a short cut of file from C ...copied & pasted to desktop... windows gallery(2).exe, nope that didn't work either.

    I am out of options....but not giving up...really do not want to re-install Windows OS 7x64 from scratch ..unitl I saw this from you..Tim...

    I have attached ...1 of the MANY event viewer error messages...not sure if its the right one...I hope you can le me know if there is still hope of recovering photo gallery....

    Please advise

    Hi Phillip

    I will have to try that ..i hope it works ...at this moment photo  gallery willnot even open jpeg. looks like I found the crash file by "clicking" in event viewer. "find" on...right side ...not sure if this is the cause but I found several APP crashes.

    i will try removing all..file except jpeg....when u did that was Windows live Ess installed? how do u do a WLPG scan?....
