How to fix "Windows Photo Gallery has stopped working" ?

Windows photo gallery is one of several programs I use while working with my photo files and I find it useful, is some instances more than the expensive programs. But it has stopped working and I'm looking for a fix, preferably without having to reinstall the operating system and having to reload everything on my hard drive. Anyone have any suggestions? I can still open files and edit them, just can't "go to the gallery".

Hi Photofan,

Do you have another user account that you can try Windows Photo Gallery and see if you get the same error message?  If you do try it with another account and don't get the message try going through the following steps and see if it resolves your issue.

    1. Click the Start orb

    2. Type folder options in the Start Search box, and click the Folder Options program

    3. Select the View tab

    4. In the Advanced Settings window, underneath Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders

    5.  Click OK

    6.  Navigate to the following folder ( %user% is the name of the account having the problem):

    C:\Users%user%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery

    7.  Copy any files in here to another location as a back up and then delete them from the Windows Photo Gallery directory

Once the files are deleted, try to start Windows Photo Gallery.

After that go back in to folder options and select Do not show hidden files and folders

    I hear you: I hate Windows 10! Having had to use XP for a bit I saw why Windows 7 is better than XP, but a natural improvement. Yet, all those things that made Windows 7 better than XP, Windows 10 does (or maybe did) not do. It's like the OS went backwards! As for MS Office, I still use Office 2003 - the best one!

    I am not using windows 10. I am learning disabled and my expensive writing software I just spent hundreds of dollars for, on ,y fixed social security income, isn't windiws 10 compatible. I used to love Microsoft but they have no customer loyalty. otherwise they would heed the customers on things like chess titans, windows photo gallery, a n upgrade of windows basic essentials (the best ever email) and a protected email address (I have always had Hotmail since email started). then I see that they are just forcing people willy nilly by sending updates that freeze their windows 8.1 computers, and doing things like this with a program they sold us on, and now refuse to upgrade when we love it. and the [rograms offered like wORD365 just get more and  more expensive and worse and worse...I cannot afford a word processing program if they keep this up and I am a writer. I don't know when I ill be able to afford to replace my writing software. I have had to stop all automatic updating because they keep crashing my computer.

    My version of Windows Live Photo Galley (WLPG) uses a version of SQL Sever 2005 to store data about pics.

    SQL Server 2005 is incompatible with Windows 10.

    So WLPG does not work with W10.

    I tried installing a different version of SQL Server 2005 on W10 and SQL Sever 2005 refused to start at the last part of that install.

    Do not know what the latest version of WLPG uses, but it might be a good idea to upgrade WLPG before installing W10.  A bit late for myself :-(

    Why don't you just discontinue Photo Gallery, take it off the market.
