With this problem when you  go to the Notification area, the volume box there is greyed out and you can not get it back this way. My plwer box there is also greyed out. Mine happened after a big 26 item update.

I realize your response is almost a year old, but I'm having this same issue.  I right clicked on the Taskbar >> Properties >> Customize under Notification Area.  The Creative Volume Control was under Past Items, but it was set to Always show.  I even tried selecting 'Hide when inactive' and rebooting, reselecting 'Always show', rebooting, and it still doesn't show.  I'm set to receive Windows Updates automatically, and the problem started with the update prior to the most recent one.

It's VERY annoying to not have it.  The only way I can semi-conveniently control my volume now is the volume control knob on the monitor.  How do I get my icon back?
