How can I stop WUAUSERV?

net stop wuauserv

The service is starting or stoping. Please try again later.

Never stops.

Product: Microsoft Fix it 50202 -- Error 1921. Service 'Windows Update' (WUAUSERV) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.

I stop WUAUSERV to delete the contents in my "Software Distributions" folder. I do that when I am having problems when downloading and installing Apps from the Windows Store. 

The Proper way to do it is as follows:

Command prompt

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Delete all the contents

Return to "Command Prompt"

net start wuauserv

net start bits

That should fix your problem.

    The Windows Store Apps get stuck in "Pending" and they never download. So by doing the steps I listed, it allows it resume the download and install properly. Now if you don't understand that, please do some research. I am not your teacher.

    Thank you for your help. I'm sorry if I wandered away from this thread.  The problem with WU and the WU Service went away and so did my attention. I would have to research what I did that ended the problem.

    You have been a mainstay of windows forms and I salute you and your work.

    Sometimes these spooky problems are caused by all sorts of general problems, such as resource starvation (I used to run out of root or temp disk space regularly).

    One of the best things I have done was put the temp

    directories on an SSD, along with swap space. All sorts of spooky problems went away.

    I believe and hope. 

    I will have to check but the urgency of the problem has passed and I have deadlines that

    mean I can't run down every error message unless it blocks me from getting work done.

    I have abandoned trying to get my working system fully functional without all sorts of spurious log entries. Or not spurious. I wonder how many cycles are spent on nonsense.

    A: The Windows Store Apps get stuck in "Pending" and they never download.       

    Are you seeing the same behavior with Windows Updates (vs. updates for Windows Store Apps)?

    Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?

    Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
