How can I stop WUAUSERV?

i'm about to do a repair install from DVD but I would like to diagnose this.

I will try this again; I have clean booted no problem, but no joy, no fix.

Will do aggressive Microsoft Fix it 50202 on clean boot, then System File Scan and report.

theory: trusted installer is trashed; i tried to get under it to reset windows installer.

Also found software protection not running.

Windows Activation also report unactivated (i know this not true)

symptoms:

I can't even get the windows validation tool to install; security essentials is hanging.

I did a fix-it removal of office 2010 twice; office is removed.

FOR PABEAR:

1. hard to say; i rolled back to Sept 1 and attempted to repatch forward. Security essentials has been running for ever.

Installed it with the OS last year. I have already done a scratch hard metal reinstall on this machine. As a software author, I want to know why / what is going on.

2. none, other than google pack tried to install spyware doctor, add-aware, and
3. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?
4. Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

Windows update and security essentials hangs attempting to reinstall.

Hello Drdbkarron,

Thank you for your post.  Try the following steps in order:

1. Perform a Clean Boot.
2. While in the Clean Boot state, click the link here to Reset Windows Update Components.  Run the FixIt! in the aggresive mode.
3. After the reset completes, run an SFC Scan (The instructions are below):

Click 'Start' > Type cmd in the search field > Right-click the command prompt at the top of the list and select 'Run as Administrator'

Inside the command prompt, type sfc /scannow > Press 'Enter'

4. Reboot and test.

Minimum information to post: Version of Windows and Service pack level.

Windows 7 PRO 64 bit.

 Also post if you are using 32bit or 64bit version of Windows.

Update number of the last update installed prior to any problems.

Kept updates current; when updates stopped working I rolled back to Sept 1; attempting to move foward.

No updates completing.

Running Security Essentials, updated to yesterday.

ran malicious software for September, and other various antivirus scanners. All clean.

If you don't know the update number then give the date that the update was installed. The update number of any failed updates. Error code from any failed updates or if you believe an update has caused a blue screen, give the error codes from the blue screen. Other information to post: Steps already taken to correct the issue and the results of the steps. If the issue has ever happened before with other updates. A couple other helpful pieces are: What anti-virus program you use, if it is up to date, and if there has ever been any other anti-virus program installed. If your version of Windows was upgraded from a previous version or if it came with (or was clean installed with) the version you are currently running.

NOT SEEING ERROR CODES, JUST FAILURE TO COMPLETE OR START. HANGS HANGS HANGS,

then on reboot tries to complete and also hangs. Have to reboot into safe mode and disable service

then reboot.
