Windows Live Movie Maker-How to change the file type of a completed project

I created a video using "Windows Live Movie Maker. The output file is in a .wlmp format. I can only view this video using this application which creatwd it. I would prefer to use my windows media player. Windows media player can not use this particular format. I then tried to convert this format into something more usable such as avi, mpeg or wmv using the bundled software "Video File Format Converter. This application will not convert .wlmp at all. So my questions would be 1) is it possible to change the type of output file of the "Windows Live Movie Maker? or 2) Is there a different converter on line that can convert theses files? (very few choices on line and most sites are not recommended ) 3) Is there a different video player I should download on line and use? Thank you so much...Bill

Open Windows Live Movie Maker and click File > Open Project to open the WLMP file, and then click File > Save movie (instead of Save project or Save project as) to save your WLMP project file as a WMV video. (In Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, you can also save WLMP to MP4.)

.wlmp file is a project file not a movie file. Instead if saving the video as a project in Windows Live Movie Maker, save it as a movie (Save movie option).

WLMP is not a movie file. It's the Project file which

is only useful for re-editing in Live Movie Maker.

.wlmp files are not actually movies, that why you can't view it with anything else. A .wlmp is a movie project file, it is essentially the "recipe" to create the final product.

You don't need any converter, you just need one more step in Movie Maker, you need to Publish the movie, that will create the AVI or WMV or whatever format you choose.

There are no other output formats provided... but what you could do is to use a separate conversion program to change the .wmv file created by Movie Maker into a .mp4 file. One tool I've used for this is Freemake Video Converter (freemake.com). Just pay attention to what it is installing to make sure you want everything it offers. I usually install just the conversion program and nothing else.

As others have noted, to save your movie you using the File menu (Alt+F) and Save movie. In the latest versions you can save in either .mp4 or .wmv format. If you are having trouble saving your final movie, there are several possible causes. It usually has nothing to do with disk space.

The most likely causes are:
1. You are using incompatible source files -- The best solution is to convert any problem videos to .wmv format. I've used Freemake Video Converter for this task; just be sure to choose the "Custom" install option to make sure you can control what is installed.
2. Your video graphics driver is out of date -- To fix this, run dxdiag and look at the Display tab. Figure out who makes your GPU and go to their website (e.g. Intel, NVidia, AMD/ATI) and find a driver update utility.
3. Your project is too long and/or too complicated for Movie Maker to render as a movie -- to fix this make several copies of your project file (.wlmp). In one copy, try deleting from the end of the project until you are able to save the movie. Once you have saved part of it as a movie, open the next project copy, remove what is already saved as a movie and repeat the process. Keep doing this until you have all parts saved. In the end you can join these all together in a new project.
