Hello - can anyone help me find a solution to my problem?
My problem:Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt. Status:Oxc000014C
I tried everything the sytem advised from going through safe mode etc.. I also attempted to reload my OS - which was last updated via windows update site. However, it did not work - probably because of all the updates from MS which meant that it would not load from the DVD.
It was a completely new custom system with MS Vista Untimate 64 bit, Office 2007, Asus MB, 250 GB HD ATI video card. I was using Vista for almost a year and had no probelm prior to today. All original software.
I have my thesis and several files I was working on for someone - I was doing some consulting work for to supplement my income as a student.. Unfortunately, when I last used my system last night it was ok. Now I canot get my system to work.

I ended up contacting Microsoft directly and they were able to get my system up and running without me losing any of the data. Hooray for Microsoft!
My system is back to normal and I am making sure all my files are backed up on DVD's.

I have the exact problem with the exact errors. The problem I'm having with mine is that my windows install disc won't read to fix the problem. Have tried all of the above but still nothing.
As a first step i ran chkdsk. Fixed.
its nice microsoft helped as they will do nothing for me since i acquired a computer with vista ultimate sp2 installed. I freelance for computer repair and this computer had several bad programs and viruses that corrupted many dlls. i have fixed those dlls but cannot do much since i dont have a Vista CD and i told microsoft that the product keys are encrypted in the registry and license folder. they want 99 dollars for support repair and told microsoft i can buy 8.1 for 123 dollars. the computer i acquired is 64 bit and capable to run 8.1. windows did do over 100 updates through the backdoor on the OS so i know the Vista Os is legitimate.

i didn't have to go that far into the details.
i used a windows 7 os cd to repair vista. from the first screen i hit f9 then, with the cd in, selected USB hard disk. from there the wizard held my hand the rest of the way. i could not get far enough to open a command window and there was no repair option that i've seen in other screen shots of the problem.
so i found out that you dont necessarily need a vista CD which was most of my problem, my windows 7 os CD had the repair wizard to solve the problem.
also this error began when my battery died while the computer was running.
this is a HP T8300 laptop, used and i est. that its 6 years old. it is running vista business.
anyway thanks for the help, i can limp this brick along for another couple semesters.
