Hi there, I have re-arranged my desktop and moved the task bar to the left side of the screen. Therefore I have moved my desktop icons and my gadgets over to the right side of the screen and lined them up in order to what they are, (ie: MS Office icons in one row, excel files I use on a regular basis, Adobe program and so-on and so-on). Everytime I re-boot my PC about 2/3rds of the icons keep moving back over to the left side of the screen and arrange from top to bottom.
I have checked and un-checked align icons by grid and it makes no difference.
I didn't have this issue in VISTA but when I installed Windows 7 I have this issue.
Any suggestions here on how I can stop the icons from moving??

Had the same problem. Please go to this link, there are separate programs for 32 & 64 bit Windows (I have 64 bit, that works fine, cannot know about the 32 bit, but....):

Al;though designed for Vista, it is fine with Windows 7 Ultimate. Might do for XP, haven't needed to use it there.
Luv this solution, it's nice and simple, and never fails me... (as long as I remember to do it each time i rearrange my icons, which isn't often)

It appears that windows has to learn where it can put icons!!!
I normally an icon top left corner two top middle and a further three top right - all of which on reboot went down the left side until i placed icons 1 at a time on the next right available space on the top line and rebooted. It stayed where I put it. Did this all the way across the top row and low and behold after deleing the unwanted icons I can position wanted icons anywhere and they stay there after reboot

I have the very same original problem of the icons returning to where MS wants them after re-boot.

I tried saving my desktop when I put a background on..and it worked OK until today..Now it's a mess again.
I did not put Windows7 on this because I wanted it...my HDD failed and in buying and having installed a new HDD, the tech could not re-install XP..{boo-Hoo] I loved that program..and learned it over the last 6 years.
Now I have this silly programs that thinks for me and I am insulted. It is like MS has said to me that I am stupid and have not yet learned how to work XP so they made the very same program even more graphical...making all my decisions and work automated for me.
I am going to pick up an old machgine, get a new HDD for Linux and intalll Ubuntu on it and learn this OS. Then I will not feel stupid any longer.

So, how do I get my Desktop icons to remain when I want them?
Saving the Theme did not work.
And all the tips in this column did not work..

Now what B4 I pull out some hair...
After arranging your icons, right-click the desktop and click 'Refresh'. That'll lock the current icons in place. [F5 also works if the desktop is the active window.]
Caveat: If you change a document with MS office it'll delete the old icon and generate a new one. I use OpenOffice which seems to leave the icons intact.
