Windows 7 desktop icon's keep moving

Hi there, I have re-arranged my desktop and moved the task bar to the left side of the screen. Therefore I have moved my desktop icons and my gadgets over to the right side of the screen and lined them up in order to what they are, (ie: MS Office icons in one row, excel files I use on a regular basis, Adobe program and so-on and so-on). Everytime I re-boot my PC about 2/3rds of the icons keep moving back over to the left side of the screen and arrange from top to bottom.

I have checked and un-checked align icons by grid and it makes no difference.

I didn't have this issue in VISTA but when I installed Windows 7 I have this issue.

Any suggestions here on how I can stop the icons from moving??

Had the same problem. Please go to this link, there are separate programs for 32 & 64 bit Windows (I have 64 bit, that works fine, cannot know about the 32 bit, but....):

Al;though designed for Vista, it is fine with Windows 7 Ultimate. Might do for XP, haven't needed to use it there.

    My icon moving problem solved By holding down the shift key when booting icons stay where you set them. Not only that the correct icon for Word that was missing reappeared. re started 3 times to check and icons still in original place

    I am having the exact same issue.  Running 2x LCD's with Windows 7 64, keep desktop icons/shortcuts on Secondary monitor, restart or reboot, and all the arrangement has moved to the primary display.  Checked and unchecked align to grid with same results.  This is definitely an OS bug.  Besides latest drivers and a few games, I have no antivirus running, or third-party desktop software.

    Is there a regedit fix out there like there was for 98?  I really don't want to install another companies software to get a fix for what is clearly a MS bug!  That shouldn't be the case.

    edit: and the app from http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-windows-vista/ doesn't fix the icons moving on start-up, it just lets you manually load a saved profile which does remember your current desktop, but it is NOT a fix.

    I have the same problemthe Geek Sqaud counldnt give me a answer on how to fix it.... I also am having a problem when it goes into sleep mode I hit a button and nothing shows up on the screen.

    Then can someone tell where to go to make my computer stay on longer than a few mins when not in use.. I have windows 7

    That may solve the problem when you reboot, but I find that whenever I save a document of spreadsheet, the icon moves to the left also.......Win7 default, even with no autoarrange
