Hi,

I would suggest you to check in the BIOS if it is disabled.

Here is the link for more information:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/BIOS-frequently-asked-questions

Note: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

You can also check the mother board manual to know more about BIOS.

If that doesn’t help, then you need to check the connections in the system tower.

I am able to use the USB port for my Iomega portable hard drive, but none of the flash drives are recognized.

This problem may occur if upper and lower filters are being used in the registry and are corrupted. I don't understand this.

It also mentions Windows automatically updating these drivers. I don't think my computer is set up to download drivers.

I couldn't agree more.   None of the USB ports front and back of the computer recognize the flash drive.  I checked the  Universal Serial Bus controllers and all are functioning properly.

I still can't get my printer to print documents saved to a file except PDF which of course I can't edit since I don't have Writer.  I have spent days on community boards for Microsoft and HP to no avail.
