Taskbar does not Auto-hide all the time Windows 7

**Original Title**Windows 7 taskbar won't consistantly autohide. After changing the properties to Autohide and clicking 'OK', it hides for a brief second then reappears. Other times it autohides as desired.

My taskbar autohide behaves in an erratic pattern.  When I have an alert, it autohides after resolving the alert, but other times it refuses to go away, even if I, once again, open the properties, uncheck autohide, recheck autohide, then click 'apply' and/or 'OK'. As I type this, the taskbar stubbornly remains!

In the "good old days" applicaitons would often un-hide the Taskbar so their notification icons could show an updated status and they could ensure it would be seen.  I think this method has fallen out of favor, but older applications that haven't been updated could still be sending the commands to the system to show the Taskbar.  Is it possible that you have an older app in the notification area that's affecting the Taskbar as described?

What notification area icons do you have (and what versions)?

For what it's worth, I just tried disabling Avast Pro 5.0 and it still allowed the Taskbar to auto-hide.

Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

See that “Lock the Taskbar” is not enabled. If it is, you may disable it by right-clicking on taskbar and unchecking it.

Still the same behavior?

If such is the case, I’d recommend you to download Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer. This will make sure that any virus, spyware or other malicious software on the computer is wiped out completely. Also if the weird behavior is due to any one of those, running the essentials will fix it.

    The-Ceej....thank you.  great answer.  Does anyone know if the same situation occurs with Win8 or 10?  I was just trying a Win10 computer but forgot to try it.  I want absolutely no mouse activation of the taskbar.

    Something is causing this problem. I actually found what was causing it, and I posted a solution for it it a couple of pages back. I'll repeat it here:

    I found a solution to my problem that may be applicable to yours. In my case, the taskbar would freeze after a scheduled Mozyhome backup (but not after a manual backup). I fixed the problem by going to the system tray, selecting Show hidden icons, hitting Customize, and changing the property for Mozyhome in the pull-down menu from "Show icon and notifications" to "Hide icon and notifications." The backup still runs  and pops up a window as before, but it doesn't freeze the taskbar.

    I suspect there is something running in your system tray that is causing your problem, and it might be fixable by changing the notification option. There are a number of ways you might attack this. One would be to change them one at a time till the problem stops. Another way would be to change them all and see if that fixes it; then restore them one at a time till the problem reoccurs. If you have a lot of services running in the system tray, you might consider changing half of them and using a bisection method to zero in on the service that's causing the problem. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that this is due to more than one service.

    I'm running Win7, but I would not be surprised if the same problem occurs with other versions. I would expect the same solution to work.

    I had the same issue. Make sure the auto hide is selected and the lock taskbar is unselected. Then go to task manager and restart the windows explorer process.
