Taskbar does not Auto-hide all the time Windows 7

**Original Title**Windows 7 taskbar won't consistantly autohide. After changing the properties to Autohide and clicking 'OK', it hides for a brief second then reappears. Other times it autohides as desired.

My taskbar autohide behaves in an erratic pattern.  When I have an alert, it autohides after resolving the alert, but other times it refuses to go away, even if I, once again, open the properties, uncheck autohide, recheck autohide, then click 'apply' and/or 'OK'. As I type this, the taskbar stubbornly remains!

In the "good old days" applicaitons would often un-hide the Taskbar so their notification icons could show an updated status and they could ensure it would be seen.  I think this method has fallen out of favor, but older applications that haven't been updated could still be sending the commands to the system to show the Taskbar.  Is it possible that you have an older app in the notification area that's affecting the Taskbar as described?

What notification area icons do you have (and what versions)?

For what it's worth, I just tried disabling Avast Pro 5.0 and it still allowed the Taskbar to auto-hide.

Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

See that “Lock the Taskbar” is not enabled. If it is, you may disable it by right-clicking on taskbar and unchecking it.

Still the same behavior?

If such is the case, I’d recommend you to download Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer. This will make sure that any virus, spyware or other malicious software on the computer is wiped out completely. Also if the weird behavior is due to any one of those, running the essentials will fix it.

    TASKBAR NOT HIDING

    I have had this problem today and found that getting rid of the Microsoft Office Note icon in the taskbar did the trick. I had clicked on others and noticed that when I clicked on Note and it opened in a window on the screen, the taskbar disappeared.   I had dragged the taskbar up the screen an inch or so, which displayed what was what more clearly. Right click the Note icon and then remove from taskbar. Job done.

    I think the multiupload link is to download a "helper" application. I would definitely recommend not installing any additional (and unnecessary) software in an attempt to solve this problem.

    If you look at my earlier posts, I clearly identified the cause and the solution to this problem. Something in the System Tray (far right end of the Taskbar next to the clock) is sending a notification and demanding attention. Click the Up arrow (Show hidden icons) and hit Customize. You need to change the setting for the particular item that is causing the problem to "Hide Icon and Notifications."

    You only need to change the properties of the one icon that is causing the Taskbar not to hide, but if you change them all, that will definitely solve the problem. Then you just need to do some trial-and-error to find out which one is the culprit. I used a bisection scheme to zero in on the cause -- hide half of them, and see if that fixes it. If it does, the problem is being caused one of the icons in that group; if it doesn't, it's one in the other group. Then hide half of the group containing the problem icon. Continue hiding half of the offending icons till there's only one left.

    This is the solution that worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, you have a problem that I can't solve. At any rate, I've said all I have to say on the subject, so I'm unsubscribing from this thread.
