I have two basic problems.  I have an Original VISTA that has never succeded in downloading a Microsoft update in three years.

I need to start using a second monitor.  I have identical monitors but VISTA won't even let me on first base in installing it.

I've attempted numerous fixes for this issue to no avail. I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have service pack 1 installed. I attempt to install service pack 2 but it tells me that SP1 is not installed. I look for SP1 in the programs/feautres to uninstall it, but it's not there.

    Lenovo T400.

For a long time, Windows Live One Care would tell me that automatic updates were turned off. I would turn them on. That would repeat at about every reboot.

I had to restore to a restore point, and now the problem is worse. MS Office suite no longer works. Took special software to uninstall it. Now it won't reinstall.

Windows Update now won't turn on automatically or manually. In fact, the window that appears is practically empty. There is a button, no text, no menu to the left. Just a button. Clicking the button causes a green timer bar (don't know what those are called) to run briefly but it returns to where it started, a red bar with a shield with red x. Again, the window just doesn't appear right.

    Hi Mr. Alter,

This didn't help my problem with not getting my updates on Windows Vista.  I have Microsoft Office 2007.  I haven't been able to get all my updates. It keeps giving me a code of 646.  Can you help, please?

    Thank you.
