"Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup."

I have a laptop and a desktop which were both participaing in a Homegroup.  It stopped working, so I tried to "leave the Homegroup" from both machines, intending to recreate it.  By the way, standard networking and file sharing is still working.  The desktop allowed me to leave the Homegroup, but I receive the "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup" message on the laptop.  I have run the network and homegroup troubleshooters numerous times on both machines.  I have also researched and tried everything I could find on the web, with no sucess.  Please tell me how I can reset the Homegroup settings on my laptop.

Here is a solution that might work.  It worked for me. 

"Researched the problem and found the solution. A file was corrupted and deleting it got the PNRP service running. The file was recreated correctly when the PNRP service started up. Here's the file for future reference:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst"

    It is likely that in seeking a resolution some of the "fixes" have cascaded into a series of other little problems. Any one of the steps mentioned, if modified incorrectly or not solved in a specific order will make the issue harder to solve, or worse.  :(

    If a reinstallation of windows becomes the only way of fixing it, I might recommend using Windows Easy Transfer to migrate your documents, music, email settings, etc... by saving the transfer file(s) to disk, then open the transfer file after reinstalling Windows.

    I ran the homegroup troubleshooter for the same problem. It reported that windows firewall was not configured to allow the homegroup service and offered to automatically fix it. Once done I was able to leave the homegroup. I had homegroup services running during the troubleshooting. Hope this helps.

    I have been to several sites, each leading to the other. No solutions work at the moment. Here is a synopsis of all efforts so:

    • IPv6 registry,
    • HomeGroup Listener & Provider(disabled, re-enabled and adjusted properties),
    • Peer Name Resolution protocol(disabled, re-enabled and adjusted properties),
    • Peer Networking Grouping(disabled, re-enabled and adjusted properties),
    • Peer Networking identity manager(disabled, re-enabled and adjusted properties),
    • PNRP Machine Name Publication Service(disabled, re-enabled and adjusted properties),
    • downloaded the PRNP.txt file then saved it as a .reg and inserted it.
    • Deleted the files below C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking  first just idstore, then all of them.

    I am unwilling to to a clean sweep because of data loss and no 100% guarantee for a fix.

    Have rebooted several times, and still I am unable to remove my computer from the homegroup and am still getting the same error.

    This problem has persisted for the past several weeks( when I first got this desktop.)

    I know it is now the dvd because the laptop I installed it on works perfectly. 

    Microsoft, please help fix this!
