Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    I also had the same configuration...Windows 7 Pro on wireless and XP on wired and the same problem.  I could not see my XP machine from Win7.  Turned off my wireless and switched over to wired on my Win 7 machine.  I then could see my XP machine.  However when I tried to access the shared folders on the XP machine I got the "Enter Network Password" popup.  I have the same account and passwords on both machines.  I tried everything that was suggested in the forums I looked at but nothing worked.  Finally on the XP machine I went into the Local Security Policy Settings" section to see if there were settings that pertained to this problem.  Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy.  I right clicked on Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts then selected Properties.  I selected Classic - local users authenticate as themselves.  Then clicked OK and closed all windows.  Rebooted the XP machine.  Then tried again from Win 7.  I got the shared folders on XP without any user name or password.  I am still having a problem with the wireless access though so I have to work on that next.

    One suggestion I read was to check that the drivers for your wireless and LAN devices are from the actual vendors.  You can check that in the Hardware Manager on Win 7.

    I've got same problem with logging into windows xp pro. from the beginning everything was O.K. and then out of nowhere.. i couldn't access my data on remote computer. in my case the main problem lied in wrong date. (i forgot to set up date after replacing battery in my motherboard) and I couldnt log in even using correct data : login and password. after adjusting date everything is O.K. hope it will help you.

    I had the same problem with two windows 7 machine (one was 64 bit and the other 3). I discovered that the times on both machines were off by just a day, i corrected it to no avail.

    After trying all other options here, I happened on to this option which solved my problem;

    • Open Control panel
    • Click on Network and internet
    • Click Homegroup
    • go down to "Other homegroup actions"
    • Select "change advanced sharing settings"
    • Scroll down to "Password protected sharing"  The "turn on protected sharing' is selected by default"
    • select "TURN OFF password protected sharing.
    • Thats all folk...........

    Also note that windows will not even allow you to set up home groups on two computers if their time and dates were off"

    The solution is go to your pc :  right click on the my computer check the option HOMEGROUP !!

    then go to your other pc or laptop and change the homegroup..

    PLEASE MAKE SURE BOTH THE NAME ARE SAME ..!!

     and that;s it after restart you are good to go ! ;)
